Summary
Samira needs a fake boyfriend for her cousin's wedding. Jack volunteers. The only problem is that he's the one person she's wants something real with.
--
“I’ll go with you,” he says, in the same low tone she’s heard once before. In an empty exam room last month when he said, I’ll pay for it, like it was the easiest thing in the world. Like it’s easy now to offer this.
Samira gapes at him. “Wait, what?”
“The wedding. I could be your plus one or fake date or whatever. If you want.” He adjusts the straps on his go-bag but never looks away from her eyes.
“You would do that for me?”
Abbot shrugs. “My therapist says I need to get out more."

Summary
Isn’t that heartbreak, though? To feel like you have lost a part of yourself, a piece of your soul, and wonder how you existed before them?
To go back to her life that was previously untouched by Jack feels like a punishment, and Samira doesn’t think she’s strong enough for it.

Summary
He was meeting someone. And he was genuinely excited about it. He had been messaging a woman for weeks anonymously, and he was thrilled to admit they had real chemistry. It didn't erase the pull he felt for the R-3 standing next to him, but he was excited to make a connection.
"Well, I won't keep you. I'm just waiting,” she said.
"No trouble at all, Mohan." He glanced down at his phone and sent off a message.
(20:26) I'm here. By the bar. Blue sweater.
He heard the familiar ping that meant a message had been received from the app. He glanced back at his phone, but there was no message for him. Instead, Samira was looking down at her phone. Then back to him. Then to his sweater and then his face again. Her already large brown eyes doubled in size.
Jack felt realization wash over him. Shit.

Summary
“Did it matter?” There’s a desperate voice shouting in her mind, banging against her skull. Tell me you miss me. Tell me you love me. Tell me. Show me. Hold me.She could blame the whiskey or the red wine she chugged in her empty apartment, or even her new meds. She wants to blame anything other than herself. “Did it mean something?”
She knows those eyes. She’s known them all her life, even if it took twenty-six years to finally find them. Jack rubs the back of his head with an open palm, looks through her to the door he’s always watching. “As much as you want it to.”
When the highs are stratospheric, the lows are catastrophic.

Summary
“What’s going on between you and Mohan?”After he had managed to save himself from suffocation when the whisky had gone down the wrong pipe, Jack had raised his eyes and looked bewildered at Dana, only to be met with an unimpressed and attentive stare.
Oh, she wasn’t joking, then.
─────────

Abbot and Mohan through the years, and the long winding road it took them to finally be sincere about their deep and powerful feelings for each other and do something about it.

Summary
She stands frozen just outside of Robby’s periphery, so Jack sees her first, head lazily turning to face her, unaware of the havoc wreaked by his unexpected appearance. Helpless, she watches as he, too, processes the impossibility of her in this context, as his brain tries to make sense of what is in front of him. There is a subtle widening of his eyes as they track over her face and her body, a parting of his lips, like he might say something.
No, wracks through her brain, no no no. And maybe he can see the word in her expression, in the stiffening of her posture, or maybe he can still read her mind. Because after a moment, his face carefully contorts back into polite blankness, a sharp relief to the panic she is sure is still etched onto her face.

Summary
“If I asked you to come pick me up right now, would you?”
“Yeah,” his voice is so warm it makes something in her ache. That’s not something you can fight with either. “I can be at your apartment in ten minutes.”
The ache transforms into a twisting pain. “No, I’m at Henry’s.” What a pathetic excuse for a sentence fragment.
Or, Jack Abbot did not lose her. He gave her up.

Summary
She knows that the vision of Jack Abbot holding a baby in his arms shouldn’t tug at her heartstrings the way it does. It shouldn’t make her actually consider having a baby as a 3rd-year resident, especially when he refuses to tell her what he wants.
But she can’t stop thinking about it. Can’t stop thinking about what he would look like holding a bottle. Can’t stop thinking about a child that is half-Samira and half-him. A baby with her hair and his nose. A baby with her eyes and his freckles.
They both know that this is a bad idea.

Summary
Samira knows that Jack Abbot, loopy from concussion and pain meds, will call her his best friend. Will tell her - eyes glazed and utterly, irresponsibly sincere – that she is the smartest person he has ever met; that he will give her anything in the world that she wants, all she has to do is ask.
Or the one where Samira Mohan asks Jack Abbot to give her a baby. Platonically, of course.
