When he was younger, it had felt so unjust that it had made him sick with rage, how the arc of the universe eternally bent towards Ilya Rozanov. That Ilya didn't just get everything Shane had ever wanted; he also got Shane. It felt like some kind of ironic punishment for Shane's hubris.
