“You could have contacted me earlier. Why now?”
“The challengers’ tournament is in Athens this year. They asked me to go along.”
Walter looks at him expectantly, as if he can tell this isn’t the full story.
Alexander sighs. “I don’t intend to return home once it’s finished.”

Quietly, he asked: “How’s your wife? Or… ex-wife?”
“Better off,” Molokov grumbled behind his spoon.
He knew his family quite well. Leonid liked them, truthfully. He’d teach chess to the little one, though not often as he had his hands full a lot of the times. His gaze travelled downward to Molokov’s left hand. He kept his ring as a memento, like he wasn’t able to comprehend leaving his family behind.
“How is America?” Molokov asked.
“Not the same… but it’s okay. You come to tolerate it after a while.”

Being The Drunk is easier than being a man who lost his brother only a year ago, a man who doesn’t know how to mourn the nephew he never really knew, a man who feels like he’s inhabiting the skin of a stranger most days, who feels more monster than man, who maybe isn’t a man at all. (Gender and grief make a confusing tangle when you can’t recognize your hands either way.)
Sir Toby & grief, in 7 parts.

"Go all out in romance and let the chips fall wherever" (Jenny Holzer)
Things had gotten bad. So much for everything Molokov had told him, Walter thought. The blockade had been implemented, sure, which seemed to be the most nonviolent course of action that Kennedy could have taken, but that wasn’t going to solve everything. Especially not when everything was at DEFCON 2, and the president was still authorizing missiles to be loaded onto ships to perform the first air strikes on the Soviet Union, just in case. The blockade was working, according to McCone, and Stevenson had gotten them a press win with the shit he had pulled at the UN, but that hadn’t made anyone less worried. Walter had been at work since six that morning and hadn’t left even at eight that night. He was going to plan on sleeping at his desk, just to feel useful, but Molokov called him from his home phone, announcing that he had already made it to Walter’s apartment and expected to see him at home. Apparently, Alexander had ‘things to discuss.’

If there was one thing Nastya's kid brother didn't need, it was to be told that he was a god. But here he was, wrapped in dark leather with makeup lines of black lightning spiderwebbing across his face, surrounded by a massive crowd of worshipful enablers.
(Every ninety years eight gods return as young people. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are all dead. It's happening now. It's happening again.)
