At thirteen, everyone chose their animal companion—or maybe it was more accurate to say that their animal companion chose them. Aizawa’s large cat had been waiting for him outside the door, and Yamada’s bird had followed him home. No one really knew why; it was just a special type of magic that existed in the village of Yuuei. A bond between the humans and animals that lived there.
Hitoshi had been looking forward to his thirteenth birthday from the time he knew what an animal companion was. But that day, nothing came. Hitoshi watched as his friends’ birthdays came and went, as they introduced their animal companions to the world—and he wondered why he was different.

He flips another page. He hopes Kaveh is too drunk to realize he’s not reading. “You just told me about your escapades. Am I to believe you’re secretly a virgin?”
“No, that’s not what I mean. I haven’t had good sex in… I don’t know how long. It’s all just… fucking. I want something deeper than that. I want someone to make love to me. Is that so hard?”
There are a lot of things Alhaitham could say to this. Something snarky; something supportive. He weighs his options.
But maybe Kaveh’s alcohol laden breath is infecting Alhaitham’s head, too, because what he says is a very cryptic, “Maybe you’re not looking in the right place.”

Summary
It’s as if everything that had been standing in their way is now gone. Every excuse that Kaveh had told himself has been thrown out the window in the face of Alhaitham’s life threatening injury. Suddenly it doesn’t seem as important if people know about them, or if Alhaitham knows how he feels. Why was he hiding it, anyway? What was he so afraid of?

Summary
Alarm overtook Kaveh’s expression as he looked back and forth between Alhaitham and the matra, dropping his sketchpad and leaping to his feet. “Why is there a guard here? Did you get hurt?”
“Some idiot decided poisoning me to obtain state secrets would be an optimal use of a Tuesday morning,” Alhaitham replied with a deep sigh.
Kaveh’s hands hovered uselessly in the air for a few moments as he stared at Alhaitham. “I’m sorry, what?”
Leaning back against the wall, Alhaitham let out a weary exhale. “Truth serum,” he said tiredly, raking his fingers through his hair then dropping his hand down to rub his throat. “I can’t lie.”
Kaveh’s eyes widened. “Oh my gods. Are you - are you okay?” Hurrying forward, Kaveh - with his blessedly fully covered legs - guided Alhaitham onto the divan, hands steady despite the panic in his voice.
“I don’t know. I’m just glad you’re wearing pants,” was all Alhaitham managed to answer.

Summary
Though Alhaitham’s instinctive reaction was to push this inexplicably older version of Kaveh away and demand an explanation, something about the desperation in his grip held him hostage. He could feel the rapid rise and fall of Kaveh’s chest against his own, the quivers in his body from the leftover adrenaline of travelling through what had to be some sort of time portal.
He was still trying to make sense of the situation, pulse roaring in his ears, when Kaveh’s fingers began to shift, sliding down the length of his arm until he reached Alhaitham’s left hand.
Kaveh traced along the veins there, pausing - as if searching for something that wasn’t where it should be. Then his posture fell, softening with melancholy. “Oh,” he murmured, almost to himself. “I’m not back yet.”
Alhaitham stiffened. “What?”
“You’re not my Alhaitham,” Kaveh said with a quiet, somber sigh that wavered faintly at the end.
