“The sun set a little while ago,” he replied, his distaste at divulging his weakness clearly stamped across his face. He diminished when she rose, and vice versa, their elements in fundamental conflict at all times.

Katara paced slowly, eyeing the cavern carefully, assessing it as a living space now rather than as an area solely to escape. “Right. Okay. So, we at least have a general idea of time. We’ll split the bread and eat half now, and hold onto the rest in case they don’t feed us regularly. We need to ration the water, so try to keep your sips shallow.”

Across the cavern, he just stared at her. She continued, “The area in the ceiling that they opened to drop down the food is the same spot where they dropped me through, so that might be where they always open it. We should watch that and confirm a pattern. In the meantime, I think we should set up our sleeping area as far from that as we can get, and definitely put our toileting spot as close to it as we can—”

“Excuse me, our what?” Zuko snapped.

    Summary

A messenger hawk practically fell from the sky and onto the deck. It croaked quietly in misery when a soldier scooped it up, its wings fluttering from exhaustion, feathers tipped in frost. The urgency that had driven the bird to fly beyond reason was immediately clear when the scroll was untied from its leg and slipped free from the oilcloth that had protected it from the elements – the wax seal of the head Fire Sage gleamed in the dying sunlight.

    **

“Dead.” Admiral Zhao stared at the scroll. The almost habitual smirk was gone from his face, and his expression was almost slack from the shock. “The Fire Lord is dead?”

    Summary

“You think I’d get away with that in house?” Zuko bites down his frustration. Agni, he really can’t do anything nice for her. Yes, it’s back-ended by motive, but she doesn’t know that.

Then, to his utter shock, Katara laughs. Soft, restrained. So like all those times he’d say something that amused her on his ship. “You still haven’t learned to smile when you do that.”

He’s spent months living off the memory of her smile, turning away like it was the suns glare and he only deserved to be burned. Now he stares at it, lungs shriveling the longer he forgets to breath. Wasn't he supposed to be doing something? He can’t remember. Can’t remember his own name, let alone pay attention to a nagging voice that sounds a lot like Azula’s. Not with Katara’s laugh still ringing in his ears.

    ~ ~ ~
What is Katara supposed to do when she receives a secret note from Ba Sing Se's masked vigilante pointing her towards Pao's Family Teashop and the Fire Nation's most wanted fugitives are bussing tables and serving tea?

My continued take on the series if Zutara were the series endgame. Feat Book Two canon-divergences, aged-up characters, secret plots, mature themes, pining, and Two Idiots in Love.

    Summary

“I’d hate being kept from the sun.” Zuko reaches over her shoulder so his pale hand glows. Moonlight bathes her in silver, cloaking her like a second skin of crushed diamonds. Men of the Fire Nation burn the air around them. Women shimmer like a hot summer day.

    He’s never seen anyone sparkle.

“I… I shouldn’t have stolen the moon from you. Tui’s waiting.”

She breathes in. “It’s impossible to steal the moon. But you did steal me.”
