Eddie knows Hartack’s anger because he once carried the same kind himself—the pride, the suspicion, the need to strike before anyone else could make him feel small. The difference is that Eddie learned to stop. Bill has decided that stopping would mean surrender.
Or: Eddie tries to convince Bill that wanting to hit someone and actually doing it are not the same thing. Bill refuses to believe there is much difference between them at all.

Summary
I have had this story for a very long time and didn't post it and couldn't really figure out why. I read it again recently and realized that what it comes down to is the sex scenes. It may have more explicit homoeroticism than any story I've written, and as someone who likes to think of themselves as a writer who concentrates on character and plot, having a sex-centered story kind of discomforted me. But as I've gotten older I care less about such things and decided to put it out there.
