The water burns, but Riko does not adjust the temperature. She lets it sear her skin as she rubs her limbs raw, trying to wash away the blood and the dirt and the memories. She imagines everything shriveling in the heat, like fire stripping away her outer shell until she is left with only the skeleton of herself. She imagines this is the way to heal, to find whatever still lives inside of her.
There must be something, right?
She didn’t go through with the merger; she is still Amanai Riko. But…she isn’t sure she even knows what that means anymore.

The words settle heavy on Mai’s shoulders. Take care of yourself. Because no one else will, because I cannot, because Maki may not be able to anymore.
But this is what no one has ever understood: Mai and Maki are a singular entity. In order to take care of herself, Mai must also care for Maki, and vice versa. Maki spent years looking out for Mai, standing between her and their family, taking the punches and facing the punishments. The least Mai can do is repay the favor now, assuring Maki has even a chance at survival.
To take care of Maki is for Mai to take care of herself. This is what it means to be a twin.
mai stays with maki while she recovers from the burns she sustained in shibuya. it's the only way to assure maki is safe.

She says nothing, just stares at Mai as she gulps.
“Come on,” Maki says then, and their mother watches as she reaches to tug her sister’s hand, “let’s go.”

It’s rare for her mother to act like this. Even at the age of six, Maki knows this. She knows there’s something wrong with her and Mai, and she knows that her mother cannot love them the same way someone like Naoya’s mother loves him. But she’s also only six, and so when her mother leaves her with crumbs of affection, Maki holds onto them without question.
It’s ok if it’s only within the privacy of their own bathroom. It’s ok if she at least gets to feel her mother’s touch when she washes Maki’s back.
