Fukuzawa's voice, when it comes, is quiet enough that Dazai has to strain to hear it over the ringing in his own ears. "The Armed Detective Agency acknowledges the debt incurred to the Port Mafia during the incident eleven months prior, and agrees to its resolution as specified: the permanent transfer of one member's service and loyalty, at the receiving party's discretion." A pause, long enough that Dazai can hear exactly how much it costs him to keep going. "The receiving party has named Dazai Osamu."

He doesn't understand how or why this kid has marked him as a target, why something feral and animal and familiar in him is still boiling up to meet him as the boy moved past Chuuya with a knock of their shoulders, as the elevator doors closed between them with a mechanical hiss.
But Chuuya thinks of blood-slick knives and slaughterhouses and doesn’t think he’d mind splintering the bones of those long fingers beneath his own, or crushing the boy’s windpipe with a forearm; catching the last of his breaths and watching the last semblance of light fade from those dark eyes before he dies under Chuuya’s hand, before Chuuya eventually follows.
At least there’s something to look forward to in the arena.
