When Barbara came in late at night to pick up something that she’d left in her classroom, she did not expect the light to Janine’s classroom to be left on.
Even worse, she did not expect Janine to be sitting in that classroom, at her desk, staring into space. She thought she’d gone home at a normal time with all of the other teachers.
Nope. Janine was still there.

Barbara opens the book. It is thin enough that she can comfortably hold it open with just one hand. The other hand dashes into the fire, fingers twisting in strands of flame. As a young girl, she braided her friends’ hair; as a mother, she braided her daughters’ hair; now, in the vibrant sunset of her life, she is overcome with the urge to braid Melissa’s hair. Maybe she will, later. For now, she will read to Melissa and let Melissa stoke the flames within her.
