Summary
“One second, man. Have to get rid of some fucking–” Daniel looks back down to his phone, “..some.. uhm..”
He pauses. The phone rings, the person calling isn’t yet saved as a contact on this new device. Daniel would’ve hung up on them already, but he recognises the number as it lights up on his phone.
“I’ll have to call you back.”
All the protest on the other line, of which there was a lot, is silenced as Daniel hangs up. The only noise left is the persistent buzzing of his phone. Daniel takes a moment to psych himself up. He takes a deep breath and his thumb moves over the green button in the corner of his screen.
"Rachel!" Daniel yells, far louder than he intended to. Off to a great start. “Hi, hey, how are you doing?” He quickly moves the phone to his ear.
It’s quiet for a second.
“Hi, dad.”

Post book release, Daniel gets a visit from one of his estranged daughters. Daniel reacts totally cool calm and collected.

Her Radiance was mysterious and private, but after over a decade in the city everyone knew of her two sons: Godard and Filoneus.
Sir Filoneus was away, fighting in Telmora or Argosia or somewhere quite a ways from home. He was barely 17. The elder son, Lord Godard, was rarely seen. The Photarch said he spent much of his time in meditation, communing with the Light. As such, he was almost never without his mother, and never outside of the confines of the Villa Aurora or the cathedral.

Summary
A frustrating experience during a battle causes Julien and Occtis to reassess the argument that they had outside Obrimus Manor.
“What the fuck was that?” Julien’s voice was loud and clear and, most of all, more furious than Occtis had ever heard it before.
He grimaced slightly, but he wasn’t the one being yelled at, not this time, so he decided to take a few steps away from the group to begin the process of re-summoning Pin, who’d been destroyed in the battle.
“What was what?” Thimble asked, and she sounded genuinely confused. Human-sized again, and Occtis had almost gotten used to that. “Kattigan saved your life back there. Why are you so angry about it?”
It was an odd little reminder that Thimble hadn’t been along during Occtis’s trip with Julien to the old empire. She didn’t know Julien, not really. She knew some version of him that he’d been before his father had been murdered, but she didn’t know him now.
“I didn’t need any help,” Julien said, and Occtis could see him glaring around at the others. “I was fine.”
