Rumi's meeting gets cut short and she comes home early. Zoey and Mira are not expecting her.
"She knew Mira. She knew. 3 years she's known and known and said NOTHING." The final word was another scream, another wrenching full body swing of the mace.
"We weren't exactly forthcoming ourselves."
"3 years of thinking we didn't want her, that we chose to not have her, that we were hiding from her."
"We were hiding." We did choose.
The mace swings again, two handed, shaft flexing under the blow.
"3 years of choking back the screams, crying into pillows, sneaking about, lying. Trying to get Bobby to set up that trust without asking any questions. Oh god Mira, is this why she never comes to the bathhouse? Is she giving us space to get our freak on?"
"Maybe. We have after all. Remember Busan?"
"Not helping Mira!"

‘Rumi.’
Mira’s hand – the one not currently holding Zoey’s – comes to rest on her arm.
‘It’s true, you know. What Zoey said,’ she adds, tossing her head toward her girlfriend. ‘Zoey’s still Zoey, I’m still Mira, and you’re still our Rumi, and that will never change.’
Rumi stares at the rare treat that is this sweet, gentle smile, and tries not to cry.
Kill me.
Or: Rumi falls first. Mira and Zoey fall five years later.

There’s something wrong with the Mourning Dove.
Not bad wrong. Just weird wrong.
As the building’s newest tenant, Zoey tells herself she doesn’t mind the weird. For a starter apartment, the place is great. Sure, her neighbor on the left is a vampire with an interesting taste for vintage furniture, and the one on the right is a virgin succubus who makes a concerning amount of eye contact. And yeah, there's likely a ghost in the laundry room, a zombie definitely lives in the basement, and the list of building rules posted in the lobby keeps getting longer.
But hey, at least the rent is decent.
All Zoey wants is to keep her head down, hopefully make some friends, and quietly settle into city life. Unfortunately, between supernatural incidents, late-night tenant meetings, and her growing inability to act normally around her neighbors, Zoey realizes that she has more in common with the other residents than she thought, and quiet was never an option in the building.Welcome to the Mourning Dove.

The vampire looked down slowly at the mess on her clothes, then back up.Rumi’s heart slammed against her ribs like it wanted out.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” the girl said, her voice cold and flat.
Rumi stepped forward without thinking, pressing the flimsy paper napkin against the slick black leather covered in her lunch.
“I—I’m so sorry,” she stammered, every syllable tripping over the last. “I didn’t mean—I wasn’t looking and—”
“You didn’t mean to walk straight?” the vampire snapped, voice slicing clean through her apology. “Or use eyes that work?”
Up close, the vampire’s presence hit like a cold front.
Terrifying, her instincts offered.
Beautiful, her brain added unhelpfully.
And here she was… rubbing at her chest.
The motion was clumsy and awkward—her brain screaming at her to help clean while her hands were busy doing exactly the kind of contact you’d never want to initiate with a stranger.
