Summary
"Zuko, my sister Katara. Katara, my roommate Zuko."
She blinks, the familiarity of the name hums in her bones as she stares at him. But then, she snaps herself out of her stupor by mentally shaking her head, realising she's been standing there looking like an idiot that Zuko probably thinks she's being weird.
But, he doesn't seem to notice as he blinks at her too.
So, she takes the initiative to offer her hand towards him, letting a smile grace her face. "Nice to meet you."

Set after “Tales of Ba Sing Se” through “The Crossroads of Destiny” while playing around with the timeline a bit.

“Did you ever wonder?” she asks quietly.
The question does not surprise him.
There has always been something between them.
Like the promise of rain in the air before the storm, something you can feel, but not touch. It lived in the edges of their arguments, in blows traded during spars, in glances that lasted a half-heartbeat too long. The way he would reach for a dish in the same breath she moved to hand it to him, side by side over the wash basin as Sozin’s Comet loomed.
He would have taken lightning for any of them, but he is alive because he took it for her.
Or, Katara and Zuko grow old together.

Summary
Destiny is a funny thing. A split-second decision results in Zuko being injured during the escape from Pohuai Stronghold. Aang is determined to turn an enemy into a friend and, despite their doubts, Sokka and Katara find themselves also starting to better understand their erstwhile pursuer. For Katara and Zuko, this new understanding could even lead to something more.
