Summary
Shane had come around on the idea of Ilya spitting on his food and in his drinks the second he realised that it was going to become a theme. The immediate gut reaction of arousal, lead fairly quickly into a private spiral of shame before looping back around to a deep wanting again. The whole thought process had occurred in roughly under 5 minutes. But knowing you liked your husband spitting on everything and asking for it were two completely different things. Shane thought about it a lot, practiced how he would bring it up in conversation in his head and tried to give small hints to Ilya that he would be open to trying it again sometime. Eventually, he resigned himself to wait, he knew Ilya well enough to trust he would handle it.

Summary
Ilya’s heart is breaking. He doesn’t want the first thing he does, the very first thing, after Shane’s choices have been so brutally ripped away from him, to be something Shane is begging him not to do. But Shane is seriously injured, much beyond what they can handle with first aid at home or even if they found a discreet doctor to make a house call. He will need an MRI, a broken bone set, probably surgery. And evidence should be collected too, for the police. That part Ilya will not push him on. But he cannot let Shane risk his life for his pride and the fear of shame that has controlled him for so long. “I am sorry, moy lyubimyy,” Ilya says, “So sorry. But Marleau is calling ambulance, and you are going to the hospital.”

Shane and Ilya are spending Christmas together in Boston during Ilya's last season playing for the Bears. They're finally out, and they're in love, and soon they'll only live two hours apart.

Summary
Ilya and Shane marry after Rookie season
Due to Shane being a little more aware of himself thanks to Yuna, over-prepared mamma bear, explaining all types of sex/attraction to him from a young age (“He needs to be prepared for anything! I am not pigeonholing my son!”), Shane knows he’s crushing on, if not falling for, Ilya.
The butterfly effect occurs; this has only one outcome really. It’s a small thing. Tiny. When Ilya is not there for Shane’s Rookie of the Year award after-party, Shane is worried, needing to track down the other man, instead of slightly annoyed/upset that he would be without Yuna’s lessons.
This in turn leads him to not doing shots with Scott Hunter.
Which means only one thing: other than the whole ‘definitely being aware of falling for your rival’ tiny thing. It shouldn’t change much.
He is not drunk on that balcony with Ilya.

Summary

In this one, Yuna Hollander walks in before Ilya can leave—and the seven-year situationship never gets the chance to start. Instead, through the power of miscommunication, Shane and Ilya start dating in 2010. With better support, they make better decisions. Their rivalry fizzles out before it ever has the chance to fully ignite, replaced instead by a beloved “bromance". In 2015, they come out to the NHL and the world.
No one believes them.
Or: Somehow, despite Shane and Ilya being out for two years, Scott Hunter is still considered the first openly gay player in the NHL, much to Ilya’s horror.
