Scent patches were mandatory for anyone participating in World Junior's, but a lot of the Russian guys Shane saw in the hotel or around the rink had them loosely attached to their necks or not quite centered over their scent gland. Shane had been on his way to his parents' car when the wind shifted, and he smelled that Rozanov, leaning against the wall and not-at-all-surreptitiously fishing a carton of cigarettes out of his pocket, must have been one of them.

so lovely and earnest. vast improvement on the book of mormon.
Ilya characterised particularly well...
really captured the sorrow of having to love someone who is clinging to something that is obviously bad for them. you don't want to alienate them or push so hard they flee from you, but sometimes you just want to shake them and other times you are so sad for them and just want to save them or pull them out yourself, and you can't. you can plant seeds but there needs to be some small initial willingness or openness from the person for them to take root. great sex certainly helps !

Ilya widens his eyes, moves his hands in an impatient “get on with it” motion. He has the urge to say it for him, end both their misery. Shane blinks rapidly a few times, takes another deep breath. “I want to stop,” he says simply.
Ilya lets out one humorless laugh, “Stop what?”
Shane ignores him. “At the All Star Game, I told you I liked you. And you said about Russia and your family. And I looked some things up. I get it. I get it better now. I know we can’t but I can’t stop wanting to be…more. Unless we stop.”

Shane breathes in deep, a contented little sigh, and then pauses for another long time. Just slightly tensed, like he’s preparing himself for something, but Ilya doesn’t really have the chance to worry before he says, “I had…a good time tonight.”
“Mm, was good night,” Ilya murmurs. Kisses hair, kisses eyebrow. “Nice dinner, nice weather.”
“Yeah, it was nice,” Shane murmurs. He sighs, clears his throat. “Thank you for such a nice first date.”
Ilya mouths first date to himself, mind running to figure out what that could mean in this context.
Then Shane shifts and says, “I wasn’t sure what to expect when you asked me out.”
Ah.Shane decides to play a game. Ilya is exactly where he wants to be.

Up to this point, Svetlana had simply assumed Jane had a good mouth, or big tits, or let Ilya do unspeakable things to her. Ilya never spares her the details when they discuss their sex lives—he can get quite crude with it, actually. Sometimes Svetlana wishes he’d tone it down.
