Jud has learned to handle it over the years, this thing that happens to him sometimes. His nightstand is always flush with the side of his bed, books piled up around it at different heights. He makes sure to keep a thimble filled up with water at all times, a little bit of food in a small ziplock, and most importantly of all: he’s always kind to any type of critter he might see around the house. He would be regardless—he’s never understood people’s aversion to small rodents—but he does go the extra mile just to be really sure they will treat him well if he does run into them at times like these.

No, it makes sense, really, the timing. It’s how it goes most of the time: he goes through something incredibly stressful, and when it’s over and he can sort of breathe again, that’s when he wakes up this way. Tiny.
