“Oh, it’s a way for humans to tell each other they’re taken. To remember,” I say, popping a bunch more gummy bears into my mouth. Rocky makes a disgusted sound and I smile as I chew. “It’s just a nice way of showing they have someone they committed to.”
Rocky freezes. I don’t notice for a good few seconds, not until I get the pressing sensation that he’s staring at me, his lack of eyes irrelevant.
I turn to face him. He’s jittering, something like shaking from excitement or anger, I’m not sure.
“Rocky?” I ask.
“Grace have ring,” he points, and oh no. “Grace have mate? Why Grace no say!?”
I hold up my hands before he can get too excited, though I can already hear a familiar sound, a repeating joyful and confused song start to escape from him.
“No, no, no!” he freezes again. Deflates, a little. I sigh and run a hand down my face. “It’s… complicated.”

“I’m scared,” he said. Eva nodded, resting a hand on his cheek. Still stoic as ever, always the same, unchanging, unwavering. He breathed easier at the thought.
“It is scary. But I can guarantee you it will be taken care of, manekke. Nobody will hurt you.”
He closed his eyes to blink, but found the darkness beneath a comfort, enough to wait a few seconds to open them again.
“Promise?” he asked her.
Eva froze, though only for a fraction of a breath. Then she smiled again, her eyes bearing all the weight of her words.
“I promise.”

It's hard to not take part of each other, when so much time is spent together. They're coworkers, they're something else, they aren't friends, but they have pieces of one another in them, now. And it's hard to not seek respite in the only person who has offered it thus far, when your very life is threatened.

The red nail polish she applies for the gala matches the blood that appears when she scratches too deep, and she growls in frustration when her eyes don't focus on the buttons through the tears, when her hands don't want to stop shaking and thread open the blouse. The white fabric is freckled with little dots of blood, but shows no signs of yielding to her struggle.
