Din’s body slips free from the cage and crashes to the ground with a heavy, quiet, thud.
Bo-Katan pushes the green child safely to the side and shoves bodily at Din until he rolls onto his back. He’s boneless and still, even as she yanks free the thick needle and tubing embedded into his arm. She still can’t tell if he’s breathing or if he’d died trapped like a beetle in a web because she was too slow.
She’d told him. She’d told him not to go to Mandalore. She doesn’t want to add his name to the list of her dead here.

“Won’t be able to sleep,” he said, drumming his fingers on the desk. The fabric heart in its crinkly plastic evidence bag lay there, fading second by second in the harsh office lights. He picked it up again. “Don’t want to go home and stare at the wall; might as well be useful.” Samantha had pretty nightgowns with flowers on them, but these flowers? He’d never paid much attention. She was a little girl. He had been becoming a teen boy. He didn’t care about pretty nightgowns with flowers. He wondered if his mother still had them, if she would notice if he looked, if he was just going to get all of their hopes up and find the answer to some other family’s tragedy instead.
“Mulder,” Scully said, somewhere far away. She sounded gentle, like she did when she talked to Cecilia. “You need to try.”

He squeezed his eyes shut and blinked them open again: nothing had changed.
They’d come up against shape-shifters and mirror images and extreme powers of suggestion. Call it what you want, Scully, he thought. This is the real deal.On a good day, Mulder has trouble finding where he ends and Scully begins. Knowing this does not prepare him to wake up in her body.
