Summary
It’s such a small thing, and yet Buck feels almost like he’s intruding by catching the moment, seeing it in its quiet intimacy.
He glances away, down at his own hands, and thinks rather wistfully, heart clenching something fierce in his chest: I’m never going to get that.
And it’s not the first time Buck’s had that thought; probably not even the tenth, or the hundredth. His brain tends to work a mile a minute, which means he’s used to things flitting through, sometimes with impact, sometimes without.
Now, though, it catches.
Sticks sharp and tacky in his mind.
I’m never going to get that, I’m never going to get that, I’m never going to get that.
Or: Buck thinks he’s unlovable. (Or or: Buck goes through it.)

Summary
"We can both go," Buck offers quickly, the words coming out of his mouth barely after Eddie's finished speaking. For a second, he worries it'll be enough to make Eddie shut off again, but he catches the barest flicker of a smile and a knot of anxiety releases from his chest. "I can make us lunch after?"
"You sound like my Abuela," Eddie jokes. "Trying to heal me with food?"
"Hey, I know what your appetite is like. I know you too well."
Or, five times where Buck tries to heal Eddie’s mood with food, and one time he doesn’t need to.

“I’ve loved you ever since I’ve known you, Eddie, and I—”
“Why’re you quoting Little Women at me right now?” Eddie interrupts.
Buck huffs. He didn’t exactly plan out what he was going to say, but he had a loose idea, and it certainly wasn’t Little Women. “I— I’m not quoting Little Women.”
“Yes, you are,” Eddie insists.
“No, I’m not! I’m telling you I’m in love with you!”
or, Buck and Eddie finally get their romantic love confession, even if it takes a couple of tries

Summary
"Eddie!" Buck barges into Eddie's house with his strawberries and honey and burning need to understand what the fuck just happened. "Why have you been telling everyone at the farmer's market you're gay and have a husband??!"
"Uh, cause I haven't?" Eddie says, looking confused, mug halfway to his mouth.
"Then why does everyone at the farmer's market think you're gay and happily married?" Buck exclaims. "Gayly!"
or
Everyone at the farmer's market thinks Eddie is gay and married, and Buck has no fucking clue how they got that idea.

Summary
Buck should be furious. All their planning, all the hard work and buried emotions and lying to get where they are. Buck should be furious.
He's sitting on a sound stage, lights beating down on him, sweat beading on his forehead, heart pounding in his chest as Eddie's voice echoes in his head over and over and over while the crowd is deathly silent, and god damn it, Buck should be furious.
“Roger,” Ryan Seacrest says, pausing for dramatic effect as his eyes flicker between the duo in front of him, “For twenty five thousand dollars,” another pause that feels like it stretches into eternity, long enough for Buck to tear his gaze away from the couple to the man sitting to his left, to try and catch his eye and ultimately get nowhere. “When did Kristy realize she was in love?”
It was love at first sight.
That’d been Buck’s answer. They’d rehearsed it.
But Eddie—

Summary
“Aw,” Harry says, smiling. “That’s adorable. Is it like—is it a thing? Do all of you keep pictures in your helmets?”
A murmur of general consensus ripples through their group. Harry, apparently delighted by this new knowledge, demands to see everyone’s secret photos.
“They’re kind of private,” Eddie says, crouched down to unlace his boots. He has a smudge of soot over his left cheek, and his hair has come loose from the gel, a lock of it curling over his brow. Buck likes him like this, just a little dishevelled.
or, firefighters sometimes keep photographs of the people they love inside their helmets, to remember who they’re fighting to come home to. eddie’s isn’t what buck expects.

Theo’s favorite place in the world turns out to be the wilderness park in Redondo Beach, probably because he’s determined to drown himself jumping in the pond after gigantic koi fish. It turns out that the wilderness park is a hotspot for little kid birthday parties, which is how Buck makes this discovery—they go out there for three birthdays in two months, and every single time, Theo winds up in the pond. The gross, algae-slick, surprisingly deep, surprisingly expensive pond full of giant koi fish and turtles and bugs.

Summary
Buck and Eddie kiss for the first time in the middle of a park in El Paso, in the heights of beautiful, Texas spring. They do it surrounded by flowers, a warm breeze, and a million unspoken words.
Fifteen minutes after they kiss, after Eddie's legs go shaky with anxiety enough that Buck lowers them both to the ground, staining their pants green and blue with the grass and flowers, Eddie starts speaking.
“I picked a bluebonnet once, when I was a kid.”

Summary
Romance is a lot easier to write about than it is to put into practice, and Eddie is the world’s most ridiculous living example of that. He can practically hear the kind of jokes that Shannon would make about it, if he ever told her about the books but - he didn’t. And somehow, probably just because he didn’t start writing until after they weren’t living together anymore, she never found out.
There’s actually only a handful of people in the world who know that Eddie is a writer - and more specifically, that he’s E. Diaz, one of the bestselling romance authors on the market.
or - the one where everything in canon is the same, except eddie diaz is secretly a bestselling romance author, and nobody knows. Yet.

Summary
Shannon Diaz née Garrett had a high tolerance for bullshit. You don’t get married at eighteen, become a mom at nineteen, and survive living under the omnipresent gaze of the world’s most… particular in-laws without developing many, many strategies for self-preservation. Every snide remark about Chris’ CP, every passive aggressive comment from Helena Diaz, every vertebra of Eddie’s liquid spine, Shannon took right on the chin with a smile on her face.
But there was no corner of Shannon’s life that she tested her extreme tolerance for bullshit more than whatever the Samwise-and-Frodo, Bert-and-Ernie, Crockett-and-Tubbs hell was going on between her ex-husband and his best friend.
(In which Shannon Diaz née Garrett lives, gets divorced, and helps her ex-husband realize that he’s in love with his best friend)

Summary
“I guess I’m having a crisis.”
“What kind of crisis? Should I be concerned?”
“You know, juice,” says Eddie.
Juice? Is that code for something?
“This priest told me that all this time I’ve been picking water over juice,” Eddie clarifies. “Not because I don’t like juice. I actually love juice. Crave it. But I pick water over it because it’s safer.”
“I don’t understand. Is it because water’s cheaper?”
“No, not that. I guess I’ve just been trying to– You know, lean into my desire for juice. Except, I tried, tonight, and while I did enjoy it, it still wasn’t– Exactly the kind of juice I’m looking for.”
Buck is so, so lost.
“Maybe you should consider a different brand?”
“What?”
“Like, say you love juice with pulp,” Buck carries on. “But so far, you’ve only tried clear, liquid juice. Maybe you tasted juice with pulp when you were a kid, and have been looking for it since. Maybe you’re looking for something, I don’t know, familiar? Maybe it’s been right in front of you, but you keep walking past it.”

Summary
The particular feel of the Texas heat was beginning to feel familiar again, and Eddie was finally beginning to… not settle, exactly, but he could at least believe the ground he was standing on wasn't about to be pulled from beneath him any moment. The house—he couldn't think of it as home, none of this felt like home anymore—was taking shape, becoming somewhere he wouldn't be ashamed to say Chris lived in, and he was getting the hang of this Uber thing.
His relationship with Chris was far from where it had been, but it was improving—little by little, day by day.
All in all, things were—if not good—then at least better than they had been in quite a while.Or: Eddie tries to find his feet in Texas. Even from states away, Buck has his back. Eddie's not the only one who notices it.
