He transformed himself, as much as he could. Turned himself into something more palatable, a person easier to accept. His neuroses weren’t any more extreme than your average player, his dryness a personality quirk instead of a sign he’s missing something.
The only time he doesn’t feel like he’s performing, really, is when he’s with Rozanov. Which is becoming its own problem.

Ponyboy knows that. He’s known that since he had asked if that was something Curly would want after the first month they’d been doing this; this meaning the hook-ups, and spending entire days together, and holding each other while they slept. Curly had laughed, a short and dismissive sound, and made some joke about Ponyboy reading too many romance novels.

In September, a few days after Ponyboy handed over one of his longer pieces, fifty something pages exploring the sacrifices you make for family, a story that ends with three siblings reconciling, Mr. Syme asked him to chat. And Ponyboy had sat, expecting to be handed back an annotated copy, one with so many notes about his run-on sentences.
And instead, he got handed a pamphlet. A few, actually.
“What are these?” he had said.
“Mr. Curtis,” Mr. Syme’s voice was light and casual sounding. “I was wondering if you have been doing any thinking about applying to colleges.”
“No.” Ponyboy didn’t have to think about it.

Once the familiar soundtrack began spilling through the speakers, Ilya tugged Shane a bit closer. His hand began creeping up from where it was resting on Shane’s stomach. It snaked up his chest, ghosted over his throat, until it reached its destination at Shane’s mouth.
“Open,” Ilya murmured.
And Shane did. Ilya felt those two heavenly, pink plush lips part, and Ilya pushed his index and middle fingers into Shane’s awaiting mouth.

The people around him had already picked up on his other weird tendencies. His religious rigidity, his flat tone, the way he stumbles through the most benign of interactions. People call him words like neurotic, tightly-wound, robotic, boring– and he doesn’t mind all that much. But if people knew that a lip smack, overhead lighting, or another person’s touch could send him melting down, they’d call him something worse. Weak.
or; Shane gets overstimulated on game day against the Raiders. He tries to hide it from Ilya in fear of being seen as weak, so Ilya has to remind him just how loved he really is.

It’s the summer of 2016. Ilya is in Moscow, and definitely absolutely not spending more time flicking back through his text history with Shane than dancing with hot girls in the club. Shane meanwhile is doing things like helping his buddy Pike wrangle his brood at a museum, where he meets the super cool and really nice and maybe kinda cute docent, Dylan. He’s made a new friend. They have common interests. They hang out.
Ilya has a completely normal reaction to this.
