The simple solution is this: Palpatine isn't willing to entrust Skywalker's safety to anyone but the best. This results in the swapping of two battalions - one headed for Coruscant with one headed to Aranata - and in so doing, ends up with the perfect set of pawns in his hands.
Rex would very much like to keep as many of his boys alive as he can. Whether that takes the form of fudging numbers, taking their shifts and work, or keeping his missing time a secret, he's willing to do whatever it takes.

“C’mon,” Hound says, knocking his shoulder into Fox’s with a force that makes Fox stumble. “You gotta admit, it’s pretty funny.”
“It’d be funnier if we didn’t have to investigate fucking bird murder now,” Fox mutters. He can’t believe he chugged his caf for this. The burn on his tongue still stings.
“Burder,” Hound says under his breath. Then, “Wait. You’re not really going to investigate it, are you?”
Fox stops. Hound does, too, shifting his weight, uneasy, like he senses he’s stepped into a trap. “Of course I’m going to fucking investigate it. It’s my job.”
“But. It’s a duck.”
“Wrong. It’s the Chancellor’s duck. And that makes it our problem.”
“Our?” Hound asks weakly.

A light flush spreads across the firefighter’s cheeks. It’s almost like she’s embarrassed by the memory, and Annie might’ve found it endearing if it weren’t for the fact that her breathing was beginning to fail. Anticipation and apprehension rises up her spine while the other woman finds her words.
“A woman yelled at me from her window on the day I took my tour. It was...a horrifying experience, and I decided not to return to it,” she explains almost sheepishly, shrugging one shoulder and glancing away just in time to miss the way Annie’s face transforms entirely.
In all of one moment, everything is startlingly clear. Annie can see this woman in her mind’s eye, standing below her window in a red scarf. She can see Ymir screeching and her running away and Annie missing her by mere moments. It’s a perfect play by play that she’s been repeating in her head for weeks, except now she actually has a face to imagine. And that face has her stomach dropping all too suddenly, has all the blood draining from her head, has her squeezing the cat in her arms tight enough for him to let out a mrow of alarm.
Oh fuck.
