Summary
“So you’re Buck and he’s Bucky?”
“Right you are!” Bucky gloats, eyes alight with mirth. “Been that way since the very beginning!”
“That’s what he’d like you to think.” He snorts, kicking John under the table, catching the toe of his boot.
Much as John would like to cite it as such, that’s not really the truth.
No, Gale “Buck” Cleven hadn’t always gotten along with one John “Bucky” Egan. Not like he does now, not even remotely. These days, you’re more likely to find them together than not, but back at the very beginning, it wasn’t like that at all.

Summary
The whales are there for only a few minutes, surfacing once more and then never coming back up as the light fades to an inky black night, nothing but the ship's lights creating a halo of visibility around them. Winter clouds above, there are no stars to differentiate the sky from the sea. It's a cold, unsettling feeling, and John’s hairs are rising on the back of his neck, Alice rolling over waves he can’t even see. A speck of life dropped off the end of the world.
“Entering the crab grounds now, boys. Everybody on deck to load those pots and drop ‘em down.”

Summary
The war is over, but some questions remain about where Gale and John go from here.
-----
Gale’s not sure who he’ll be without the war, without the Hundredth, without a B-17. But he knows he won’t be Buck without Bucky. Won’t be himself without John.
Perhaps that’s why John tried to slip away unnoticed tonight, why he came out here and tucked himself into the copilot’s seat. An attempt to sever a limb, one he knows he can’t take home with him. They’ll hang up their dog tags, box up their flight jackets, try to forget the rumble of a nine-cylinder engine and the buzz of a voice over the radio and a blue, blue sky.
Gale doesn’t know how to tell John that a life without him would be like never feeling the sunlight again.

Summary
John had never needed to consider what came next. He had no concept of an after. Looking forward was a fool's errand, a waste of precious time. Every shout of laughter lingered, every sip of beer was savored. He lived the years he thought he wouldn’t get in the minutiae.
Or, how to build an after.

Summary
"There’s no limit to what John Egan can take. John Egan can take a shovel to the head. He can take a German cigarette. He can take a plane getting shot to hell, plummeting to the ground. He can take Air Exec as long as he can shove it up Hap Arnold’s ass. He can take the loneliness and the jealousy and the rage and the stupid fucking war and these stupid fucking Nazis and the goddamn cold and the feeling he gets sometimes, the absolute certainty that hits him like a bullet every so often, that he’s already dead, and this is Purgatory.
He can take it all. He can take it when Buck says he won’t escape, won’t even think about it, because he wants to make it back to Marge alive — to hell with John, already dead and rotting in front of him. He can take that, too."
In which John Egan wants and wants and wants.
