    Sixteen-year-old Avery Hastings has a relatively normal life: learning to drive, trying his best not to fail algebra, and helping his best friend Derek Hutchins–the human Vessel of an eldritch entity known as the King in Yellow–stay safe from secret government agents who want to find him after their breakneck escape from the Department of Metaphysical Sciences nearly six months ago. Things get crazy sometimes, but Avery wouldn’t have it any other way.
    Behind the scenes, however, new threats are brewing. The Department has been infiltrated by another entity like the King: powerful, incomprehensible, and intent on ushering in an age of madness, assisted by its human worshipers in the Department and elsewhere. With the government agency responsible for curbing metaphysical threats compromised, and Derek’s eldritch ‘episodes’ worsening, Avery, Derek, their friend Alex, and an unlikely ally from within the organization will have to figure out a way to prevent the apocalypse themselves.

    Three months after the New Year, Avery is trying his best to move on and keep living his life. He really is. That is, until he finds that the World that should no longer exist isn't done with him, and he gets the opportunity to try and be better. Again, and again, and again.

    He knows he's walking into a trap. But he knew that the first time, too, and id it didn't stop him back then, it sure as hell isn't stopping him now.

    With his future– and the future of the entire world– hanging on his ability to maneuver both Derek's self-sacrificial tendencies and the King's manipulations, he just has to hope that given infinite attempts, his ability to hinge everything on a last-minute solution will be enough to pay the favor back.

    Somewhere not too far from him, a forgotten book resurfaces.

    “…and now we bring you some disturbing news of a disappearance right here at home in XXX County. Derek Hutchins, 21, was reported missing by his motherー”

    Avery’s head whips up so fast he nearly gets whiplash and stares up at the coffee shop TV tuned to the local news.

    “ーafter two days of no contact and multiple missed calls. This comes in light of some recent surveillance footage discovered by investigators which shows men in black arriving at Derek’s home in unlisted vehicles and carrying out a body, whom Derek’s mother has identified as her son. The identities of these men have not yet been determined. Police are urging anyone with information related to the case or Derek’s whereabouts to come forward."

     

    Or: the soul remembers what the mind's forgotten, Derek is alive, the government is up to no good, and Avery really, really isn't prepared to deal with any of that
