Will doesn't speak. He decided to stop using his voice for his own personal reasons, but slowly, he starts to think that maybe it wouldn't be bad at all if he decided to use his voice again. Maybe that talkative boy– Mike, from Creative writing, might be the first person to prove him he was wrong about that part of himself.
Of a boy that after going through a lot of pain stopped using his voice as a defense mechanism, and a boy who can't stay quiet for long because his thoughts overwhelm him.

Every night it’s become a routine for Mike to wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat. He’d make a cup of coffee quietly and stay up the rest of the night, reading comics until the sun came up. Anything that kept the night terrors away. He’s become addicted to the feeling of staying awake or rather not facing sleep…until Will catches him up in the middle of the night.

Mike didn’t show up to the airport last summer, and Will didn’t come back to Indiana - until he found himself on the Wheelers’ doorstep at Christmas.
In which Mike and Will haven’t spoken in over a year, and neither of them quite know how they ended up on a road trip back to California as roommates.
Or, with a little bravery, some interference from friends old and new, and a whole lot of butter, Mike and Will might actually stand a chance of being honest with each other and getting what they want.

“What the actual fuck, Will?!”
Under different circumstances, Will probably would’ve found this funny.
Unfortunately, he was starting to get lightheaded.
“Dustin,” Will interrupts, voice strained. “Listen, I’m sorry you found out like this, but I really need you to calm down right now.”
Dustin whips around to face him, eyes wide with panic.
“Right.” He says, voice shaking, “Right, okay—oh my God, you’re bleeding so much. What do I do?”
“Call Mike,” Will says, fighting to stay conscious. “And grab a first aid kit. Please tell me you have one.”
Or: Dustin finds out Will is Spiderman in the worst way possible. Of course, Mike comes to the rescue.

Summary
For a fleeting moment he prays it’s him. That Mike could somehow be pining for him again after all these years. That Mike really has improved after five years away and maybe all they needed was time apart and everything could go back to the way it was. Go back to normal.
But things are different now. Will has a fulfilling life in New York, he had a boyfriend that he’s since broken up with. He had successfully moved on romantically. He made new friends, went to bars and kissed boys. He’s different. Mike couldn’t possibly fit now.
