The collar has fallen open at her throat. No dress shows beneath it. The belt is drawn securely around her waist, and her bare legs extend from the hem to the narrow straps of her shoes. Her curls have been loosened from their pins. Fresh lipstick darkens her mouth.
Michaela holds Francesca’s gaze. The familiar confidence is present, but not effortless. One hand is wrapped around the strap of her overnight bag. Her breath lifts the open collar.
“I still have one present to give you,” she says.
Francesca looks at the coat, the heels, the bag, and then behind Michaela as though the correct explanation might be waiting in the corridor.
Or: After years of a mutual crush, Michaela proposes an opportunity of a lifetime on Fran’s 19th and it comes with consequences.
