Summary
This is a series of short side stories for the main fic 'Why Stay?' answering the question: "What happens to these characters in the canon Frieren timeline, where the Goddess never intervened and Clara never arrived?"
The main fic is, at its core, an argument that one person staying can change everything. Consider these chapters the control group for Auffie's experiment. Same characters, minus one exhausted divorcée from Tennessee who woke up in the wrong body and decided to keep somebody else's baby.
They are not happy stories.
This will not make sense without reading the main fic.

was there any right way to go about this? to go about saving familiar faces you’ve only seen behind the comfort of a screen. to take it upon yourself to disrupt a course you know without a doubt would end relatively well considering the circumstances without your meddling. to save a group of students from the clutches of—dare you say it—despair.
no; probably not. and yet, you couldn’t just stand by. you had to save them. you had to try.

“It’s 1976,” Petunia breathed as she brushed a finger at the date on the Woman’s Own magazine. "It’s 1976, a good 15 years before I was even conceived. I’m in the London Hospital, an ocean away from where I was born. And my soul is in the body of a woman named Petunia Evans. Does that mean Petunia’s soul is in my body? Or is she dormant, sleeping, inside this one?" A shiver of terror ran through her. "Or is she dead?"
Petunia Evans was her name now. And she had a sister that needed saving, and a future nephew that needed spoiling. Hopefully she could create a timeline which consisted of both?
