Summary
Two days after their first contact—and more importantly, their first words—Grace sets up his thinking machine to speak.
Rocky does not need the assistance of a machine for Grace’s language. It is ugly and harsh to listen to, but it’s relatively simple to learn. That, and, well—Rocky was alone for a very, very long time before he met Grace. He maybe hangs on to each word a little more than strictly necessary. Grace only needs to tell him each word once for Rocky to know it forever.
Grace, though…
Well, he’s lucky Rocky is patient. Let’s leave it at that.

“Sorry!” I tell Rocky. Then: “Sorry! I was too excited!”
A joyous trill erupts from the speaker. “Grace! You speak! Finally!”
“Hi,” I say. Oh my god, what do I even say here? “I was sleeping. Apologies.”
“Adrian wanted—” Rocky begins, but Adrian interrupts.
“Rocky explained humans easily can stop sleeping. Soon as I radio♩♫♪ he wanted to stop your sleep so you could talk in here. He is so rude and cruel to guy he calls best best friend, why, question? Clearly years of space have made him ♫♫♪♩♪—”
“Grace does not need to know this word—”
“Grace! ♫♩♪♪♩! You know what ♫♫♪♫♪ is, question? This is what I am comparing Rocky to. It is very useful; you should use it lots. Or maybe not. Be kinder than him.”
“No no, Grace does not need to be kinder. In fact, he has exciting rude word referring to when not-me people teach him new words—”
“Rocky!” I bang out his name on the keyboard; that’s one I can type very fast. It’s taking the entirety of my brainpower to keep up with their conversation. “You are so embarrassing!”
“Good good, Grace is perceptive,” Adrian says. “Important adjacent principle: Rocky is embarrassing only to people he really really loves.”
That pretty much knocks any petty retort out of my mind.
“Is true,” Rocky says.

"And you know what, too!" Adrian honks. "If Grace was still here, he would tell you that you are being a horrible, lazy, ridiculous being!"
"Take that back!" Rocky roars.
Well. This is awkward, Grace thinks right next to them. He fidgets with his claws and wishes he still had thumbs.

Bucky drags Beck into a hug as she squeals and puts up a half-hearted protest. He kisses her on each cheek saying, “I love you! I love you!”
He turns towards Steve next, hovering above him where Steve’s still laid out on the sofa. The light behind his head brings out the red and gold in his hair, makes him look like an angel with his cheeks all pink with wine.
Steve, feverish and nearing delirium, beams at him. Wants to touch. “It’s 1939,” he says. “We made it to 1939.”
Bucky nods and leans down, pressing a lingering kiss to Steve’s forehead. He murmurs, “I love you. I love you.”
