    Summary

Till’s muse is Mizi. She has always been pencil lines on Till’s sketchbooks, pink paint and warm colors on his canvas.

Till’s muse is Mizi, so he doesn’t quite understand it when her image starts to get foggy and gray under the eraser’s influence, over and over again, until he’s just staring at a blank page once more.

He doesn’t understand—Mizi is still just as pretty as she was a few months ago, with her cotton candy hair and lemon green eyes. She is still just as bright, lighting up wherever she walks. So why is it impossible to draw her all of a sudden?

    ---

Over the span of a few years, Till's feelings have changed. His art starts to reflect it.

    Summary

The cheering of the aliens in the audience sounds a lot like rain, Till thinks, and he wonders if this is how Ivan felt. If he felt as much solace as Till does now, dying with someone at his side. Bastard.

The world bursts with colors, vibrant life. Artificially green grass and blue skies with lazily floating clouds. He's standing in the middle of a field barefoot, with the familiar weight of a collar on his throat. The same one he died wearing. In front of him is Mizi, hand in hand with Sua, who Till remembers died like a firework show--a beautiful spectacle that tore apart everything it touched. The first thing Till does is to turn around, to turn away from the star that mesmerized and blinded him, and at his back is--

Black eyes, wide with surprise, fingers curled into the bark of a tree just meters away. So, so close.

Maybe God hasn't abandoned us after all.

His ears pop. Blood streams from his nose, a steady trickle.

Ivan catches him when he faints.

If there's anything Till is, it's stubborn and a tad vindictive.
(They really should have killed him right the first time.)

A young Boothill was working in the fields when he spots a set of rescue ships in the distance, which have stopped working. Among the refugees, one catches his eye. He's thin, he's dirty and he's out of place. And he's the prettiest boy he's ever seen.

    Summary

It’s not long after he leaves Penacony that Boothill realizes something is wrong. He’s just finished a bounty and manages to get back to his ship before he starts coughing. Coughing in itself isn’t unusual for him – the transition from his organic throat to the cyborg bits occasionally causes him some grief – but this is different. What starts as a slight tickle prompts him to cough harder and harder, something seemingly stuck in his windpipe. He hacks until he’s nearly keeled over, and finally, finally, his throat clears, whatever had lodged itself having come loose.

He takes a few deep breaths to be sure, unclenching his fist as he stands back at his full height. His gaze is caught by a flash of red; in his palm, in stark contrast to the brushed metal, is a rose petal.
