    - DURING AND POST SEASON 4 VOLUME 2 -

That was when he saw them.
The two figures were folded over each other on the ground, a ring of dark shapes crumpled and curled around them. Webbed, membranous wings fluttered lifelessly in the wind, lifting at odd angles like plastic bags on the interstate.
But Steve could barely see them.
His ears rang, his vision reduced to a greyish tunnel as he recognised the wooly texture of Dustin’s ghillie suit.
    No.
Steve’s feet tripped beneath him as he staggered down the hill, moving towards them.
No hero moves, his thoughts washed through his mind in a seasick, rolling fashion. He could already see the dark wash of blood, soaking the ground like ink around them, as he bolted forward.
    I said no hero moves.

Steve Harrington, ex-lifeguard and babysitter extraordinaire, happens to be blessed with knowledge of first aid. Eddie is the recipient of this aid, and as he recovers he must learn to live with the fact that he owes his life to a prom-king with a 12 step haircare routine. This would be easier if he didn’t find said prom king so uncomfortably attractive.
And if the world would stop ending for five minutes.
    Geez.

“Aliens,” Eddie said, watching the confusion flicker across Steve’s face.

    “What?”

“Aliens. The new movie. It’s coming out in July, and it’ll probably be absolute shit, but the first one was so good-“

“I don’t understand,” Steve said, his expression earnest, and Eddie tugged on his hair in frustration because damnit Steve, keep up, this might be the last goddamn time I ever see you.

“You’re coming with me to see it, Steve. I don’t give a shit whether you hate scary movies or sci-fi or nothing. We’re gonna go watch Sigourney Weaver kick ass in space, and we’re gonna go get fries and shakes afterwards, and I’m gonna kiss you in my van. In July. Do you understand?”

Please understand, Eddie begged him, scouring his face as he tried to memorise every line, every feature right now, just in case…

The comprehension dawned on Steve’s face as Eddie watched him. The smile, bitter and terrified and so painfully sad, cracked wider as Steve gave a wobbly, delighted laugh, and his eyelids crinkled so tightly that Eddie could barely even see the honey-brown of the eyes behind them.

“It’s a date,” Steve offered, his expression soft, and Eddie nodded.

“It better be,” he said fiercely, and he pulled Steve in to crush their mouths together.

    Summary

It’s probably going to go down in history as the worst kiss Steve Harrington ever got, but Eddie doesn’t give a fuck. He isn’t going to get another chance so he’s working with what he’s got. It’s less of a kiss, and more of a slide of lips, wet with blood and tears but he feels Harrington’s grip tighten on the back of his shirt and he pulls back. He reaches up with the hand he can still feel and pushes back a strand of hair that had fallen in Steve’s face, smearing blood along his temple as he does.

“Sorry. Couldn’t die without knowing what that felt like.”

“Of course we’re friends, dude,” Steve says, finally releasing the weight that has been pressing down on Eddie’s chest in the silence, “But you- you want to forget it?”

    “Don’t you?”

    “Not really.”

Eddie doesn’t know what to say to that. Isn’t entirely convinced the words just fell from Steve’s lips because… what? What .

    “What?”

Steve clears his throat and looks anywhere but at Eddie, hand on the back of his neck and the swell of his bottom lip caught between his teeth, worrying it into a little red bead of blood.

“I don’t want to forget that you kissed me.” he repeats firmly, and Eddie can’t help the disbelieving, narrowed eyes and parted lip frown that crosses his face.

“Steve,” Robin frowns. “First off, we’ll always be friends, so jot that down. We have more in common than talking about girls, you know that, right? And second, you can like both. Guys and girls.”

“I know. Bisexual, I know. Okay, but—” Steve takes a deep breath and he feels so, so small. He hugs himself, wrapping his arms tight around his chest and gripping the back of his shirt. “What if I don’t?”

    Summary

"Steve 'the Hair' Harrington, a rage-filled barbarian, who knew?" Eddie says, like its a compliment, like Steve has ANY idea what that means.

"Uh, I knew. Obviously." Steve says, wisely, even though he clearly didn't. "Anyway, do you think we could eat a demobat? Or would we turn into some kind of monstrous freak? I'm starving, and Dustin's cheese crackers are not enough to get me on my feet again."

"What difference does it make to me if I'm a human freak or a monster one?" Eddie shrugs, and Steve butts his shoulder up against Eddie. It's meant to be brotherly, maybe friendly, but it's too soft. Felt like something he might have done before slinging an arm around a girl's shoulders.

"You're not a freak." Steve says, and finds he means it.

Eddie's eyes, when he looks at Steve, are curious. "No?"

    "No."

“So you started a fight?” Nancy frowns, “With half the male population of Hawkins High?”

Steve shrugs. It might be a head injury, but he finds himself saying: “I dunno, I picked a fight with a demogorgon for you. Eddie deserves the same, hm?”

Nancy’s eyes go wide, and at her feet Robin is slicing her hand across her throat, a silent ‘shut up, shut up!’, but Steve is on a roll here, so he continues with: “I’d pick fights with a lot of people for the right kind of attention.”

“Oh my god,” Dustin says, and Max has started smiling. Lucas just frowns, looking between Steve and Nancy and the others with his brows pulled low.

“Steve,” Robin hisses, but Steve just shrugs, and rolls his head onto his own shoulder, looking up at Eddie through his eyelashes.

“Which dice does a guy gotta roll to seduce the Campaign Manager, or whatever?”

“You’re a fuckin’ genius dude.” Steve purred into his ear.

Said. He said it. Normally. In a normal, heterosexual way.

Eddie couldn’t even reach his hair tie because he was too busy because smothered in warm, bare, man-skin.

Then Steve was ruffling his hair and Eddie squawked and pushed him away.

“Alright, alright I get it I’m your fucking hero. Why is an old walkie talkie so goddamn exciting?”

Steve just grinned at him, bright eyed and impossible to stare at for more than a second.

Eddie felt his ears heat and thanked his metalhead predecessors for the foresight of long hair.

    “Because this.”

Steve twisted the dials until they sat on the frequency he seemed pleased with. He lifted the receiver.

“Henderson, this is your father speaking.”
