Nancy Wheeler will think about that timing later. Three years since they got together. Three years since she broke up with Steve and admitted what she'd been avoiding since 1983. Three years of loving him, fighting beside him, surviving alongside him. Three years of learning his silences, his tells, the way he checks his jacket pocket for that cassette tape he's carried since he was twelve.
Three years. And none of it prepared her for watching him bleed from his eyes while she stood ten feet away unable to reach him.

Summary
To Nancy, her and Jonathan were always meant to be moving forward together. It was what she failed to do with Steve, with Barb; whenever she thought of them, she would always be taking two steps back, letting herself fall adrift into the past. Jonathan allowed her to envision a future, one that was surely messy and complicated, but one full of problems they would be able to resolve together, as a team.
To Jonathan, those dreams were not something he could afford.
