7/10 but worthy of a higher rating. Let me explain myself:
This piece is exceptionally well-written, in-character, thoroughly researched, has a developed plot & satisfying conclusion. As far as story goes, it's a 10/10, but my rating is based on personal preference and it just didn't have that spark for me. I liked it, and felt it was Good, but I wasn't obsessed.
That said, this is an excellent redemption piece for Javert. He embarks on a new career path and learns to apply his talents in the pursuit of what is good. And though the story is exclusively from his perspective, Valjean himself is no mystery—he is a saint, but he is also a man.
I have mixed feelings about the Catholicism of it all. It made sense, it was interesting, and it was even beautiful—it was just a little heavy-handed for my tastes.
I also would have liked to see Javert in more Situations. He was put in mortal peril, yes, but that is within his wheelhouse. What of awkward dinners at the Gillenormand estate? Such quotidian affairs put him completely out of his element, and I love them for exposing how ridiculous he is. These are an indulgence, perhaps, but I know what I like.

Summary
Jean Valjean, exhausted from the barricades and the sewer, somehow finds the strength to drag Javert out of the Seine. He has no strength left for anything else. He collapses from exhaustion on the quai near the Pont Au Change as the situation rapidly devolves into tragicomedy.
Inspired by a tumblr post from @Alicedrawslesmis:
“Oh god can you imagine Valjean having to jump into the Seine to get Javert out? the man has had No sleep for the past idk 40 hours and just had to crawl through 5 miles of sewer carrying a dead body and thinks he’s going to lose everything to the law and then this fucking asshole jumps off a bridge? and he has to jump after him? and swim like an olympic athlete against the current to get the guy out of the water from the rapids? that’s too much. That’s just god fucking with him at this point.
Valjean pulls Javert out of the water and passes out from the exhaustion of the last two days and Javert is like ’…great. Now I have to drag this man back to his apartment AGAIN’ but Javert is also exhausted from the last two days so it’s just a comedy of errors”

10/10 this is the funniest thing I have ever read. It is a perfect parody of the brick. It puts into perspective just how utterly ridiculous these men are. I only wish it wasn't unfinished! Despair!

Summary

Now he has to defeat the game of fate or keep returning to 1820, eternally dying without finding peace.

ok so here's the thing. I didn't actually finish this one but I may eventually and I still think it deserves a place in the collection. like the other fics in my collection, it's exceptionally well-written. I really loved it in the beginning but there were a couple things that started to bother me:
- Valjean is treated more like a concept than a man. that makes sense in the beginning, and perhaps it changed by the end but it stuck around too long for my liking
- It got a little Too abstract, and I found myself hoping for something more grounded
- by nature of the premise, their story is completely changed, and Valjean can never understand Javert to the extent that Javert is capable of understanding Valjean
that said, I may or may not give it another chance because it really was quite eloquent and unique, and if I do I will update this note accordingly.
