Mettaton looked back on those rainy days, gazing out of the window and daydreaming as he watched his neighbors go about their lives…
Nearly every time, his fantasies of sharing an umbrella with an exceptionally handsome stranger (whose face he could never place) would be hilariously interrupted by the mayor’s daughter squealing in fear; Kris chasing her down the street with a dirty fistful of wet, wriggling earthworms.
Mettaton would laugh—out of concern more than anything, then he’d gag a little, then he’d go back to bed; wondering how on Earth he had ever concocted such a mighty view of humans in his mind. Ever.
It's fine. Humans were fine. Sure, they just weren’t as exceptional as he had thought, but that was okay.
It wasn’t like he was anything special either.

“...How much cash do you have on you?” Asriel asks out of nowhere. Chara swivels around to rifle through their wallet.
“Fifteen dollars.” They say, plucking the notes out of the inner pocket.
“Great!” Suddenly, paws on their back, and they almost topple out of their seat; Asriel is pushing them towards the counter. “Now go get us something!!”
He gives them one last shove despite their protests, and they unfortunately stumble right before the barista with the inklike, glazed eyes and that naive, curious look.

Summary
When a special connection is nearly snuffed out, the Doctor takes drastic action to save it. The Angel is cast down, and, as they grow, the world rises up to meet them. While the Roaring grows ever closer, the vessel and the cage seek tirelessly for absolution. The path to find the lost girl is long and treacherous, but no one ever really walks it alone.

Gaster fucks up and the player ends up stuck in the vessel (with acute memory loss). As true as possible to the original canon but without the player as the red SOUL there is a fair bit of divergence.
