“… I, It Who Weaves the Clouds, Artificer of the noble ship Soars-in-the-Silence, am the only survivor of mission Grasping for Heat. The other members of the crew succumbed to space sickness. I return with their memory.” The silence in the room is heavy. I continue. “I must speak to the organizer of the mission. Alone.”

“Would it help––should I bring my dinner in too?” Grace jokes, smiling in preparation for the absolute symphony of disgusted whistles he knows Rocky will produce at the thought of them doing something as depraved as sharing a meal. “I’ve been saving this week’s half packet of ramen for just such an occasion––”

A torrent of sound not unlike four harmonizing freight train whistles bursts from Rocky, the shifting plates of carapace at the top of what Grace thinks of as his “head-and-torso” rattling rapidly. Twin puffs of superheated air escape his vents, and there’s a ringing in Grace’s ears as he watches a glass beaker vibrate itself off the edge of the lab table near them and onto the floor with a loud clang. He squeezes his eyes shut, bracing for a shatter that never arrives, then stares in disbelief at the scene before him.

[YES YES YES!] Rocky’s translator app suddenly blares from the laptop on the floor between them. [YES ACCEPT ACCEPT ACCEPT! GRACE RAMEN ♪♫♪♫ WITH ROCKY, ACCEPT! GRACE ROCKY EAT ♪♫♪♫ MEAL TOGETHER AFFIRMATIVE YES YES AFFIRMATIVE NOW.]

Without Grace, all Rocky plural perish,” Rocky continued tirelessly, as if he’d been holding all of this back for ages. “All Rocky can do is love savior Grace for rest of life. Rocky Grace ♫♬♩♪.

It nearly came as a surprise to be confronted with a new Eridian term, but Grace’s brain short-circuited upon hearing these unknown chords. Hardly able to put any sound to his voice, he uttered, “Need word, Rock.”

Meant to be together forever,” Rocky explained.

Grace took a very shaky breath. “Soulmates,” he defined. “You think we’re soulmates.”

Rocky no think,” he said, tapping one foot against the bunk to give strength to his words. “Rocky know.

“Our star, unto a special person, will bestow a gift,” my mothers lovely singing voice continued. “In the coldest of times, in despair and sorrow, when all hope seems to be lost, an entity will be birthed.”

I gasped in excitement. “What kind of entity?”

“Of light and luminance, airy and thin, ethereal in nature. A servant of the stars.”

    Summary

Rocky, my best friend in the universe, doesn’t know that his mate is a fraud. A coward.

"A coward, and full of shit." Stratt’s voice echoes through my head, flooding my veins with an icy chill. I never volunteered for the mission. I never even wanted to try. The survival of the planet depended on me, billions of lives, an infinite amount of flora and fauna, all potentially doomed because of me. Would have been doomed, if Stratt hadn’t drugged me and thrown me on the ship herself. Oh God.

    And now I’ve doomed Rocky.

I stumble to my feet, tripping over him as he follows me, squawking in Eridian faster than my tiny, useless human brain can keep up with right now. I can’t let him touch me, I don’t deserve it. I’ve doomed him to a life where his soulmate is a liar and a useless waste of carbon. I feel like the biggest failure and also as small and miniscule as a speck of dust.

    Coward.
    Coward.
    Coward.

I do the only thing I can think of at this moment, I need to get away from Rocky before I poison him further. He already almost died saving me once, I won’t risk him sacrificing more of his life for me. And so I run, again.
