“What if—” Brian works his jaw for a minute, then raises his head to lock eyes with Pat. “What if I came with you?”
Pat’s mouth clicks shut again. He digs his fingers into the fabric of the couch, staring down at Brian, cold, closed off.
“Don’t be an idiot.”
“I’m serious.” Brian’s up now, hands running through his hair nervously. He doesn’t even know what he’s saying either, to be honest, but he barrels on. “I mean—why not? I did it once. I’ll be so good. I’ll do whatever you ask and I won’t say anything and I won’t even bring my phone. Please?”
A twitch across Pat’s face. Something in his eyes, a maybe, maybe.
“No.”

Summary
Under the bright glare of electric lighting, the finer details are already starting to fade. Faces, voices. The shape of each person and how many there were to begin with. Trees and snow and a dark sky hanging low overhead, cold mud trampled underfoot, all of it unraveling like a tapestry being unpicked until only the raw emotion of it is left.
Rage. Anger. Longing.
Grief, like nothing he’s ever known.
The cold water on his face helps a little, the shock of it taking some of the sharpest edges off, but even then, it’s still enough to make Megumi want to fall to his knees from the sheer enormity of it. The feeling’s too much to hold inside his chest – it’s pressing up against his ribcage and crowding all around his heart, tight enough to choke. He would scream, if only he could stop sobbing for air.
Something’s been taken from him.
He’s lost it somehow, and even though he doesn’t have a name for it, doesn't know what or even who it is anymore, at the centre of it lies the glimpse of a truth that’s already retreating back into the dark:
Megumi will do anything to get it back.

"Itadori-sama," Megumi says, bowing deeper than he ever has in his entire life. Itadori is, after all, the oldest man on Earth; if anyone deserves respect, it's him. "I'm the sorcerer who'll be assisting you. My name is Sugisawa Megumi."
He lifts his head in time to see something pass over Itadori's face—a shadow of some kind, an infinitesimal twitch of muscle. "Megumi," he repeats, his voice a low murmur, and Megumi's surprised at how familiar it sounds coming from Itadori's mouth. "Huh. What an old fashioned name."
(Or: two hundred and sixty-six years after his death, Fushiguro Megumi is reborn. It takes a while before either he or Yuuji realise it.)
