It’s also that same forethought, the way he seems to consider every avenue and behave in exactly the right way when needed, that made Bee look sideways at Shane sometimes, picking him apart the same way Elsie did Roy. He follows the script of the perfect boyfriend immaculately, but she isn’t sure how much of himself he puts into the role. They certainly aren’t anything akin to a great romance. She can’t picture him waxing poetic about her eyes, her hair, her cheek, her gait, her voice- like her dear Troilus. She wonders if a man like that only existed in fiction, or if they only yearn for wicked women like Troilus for Cressida. It isn’t that Shane makes her feel undesirable, but. Well. His kisses make her feel over eager, too hungry, too desperate.
She tries to tell herself that he’s only satiated with technically sweet, chaste kisses because restraint is all he knows. She’s seen the ways that Shane micromanages, she can hold her arms out at her sides and reach each end of the world he’s created for himself. He just needs to let go. To see how nice it can feel to want.
Then, they’ll be perfect.
