Summary
The adrenaline wears off faster than Colt would have liked it to. Though he knew the crash was coming, he would have preferred it hold off until he and Jody could at least make it back to the hotel. He’d been having thoughts of a mattress that would welcome the shape of him, soft sheets and pillows that would aid in the bouts of pain that were sure to accompany days of strenuous movement and activity. He’d thought he’d maybe at least get to catch some of the sleep that had been eluding him since he’d touched down in Sydney.
As luck would have it, Colt only makes it back to Jody’s trailer before he feels the familiar burn at the base of his spine.

"Colt?"
That voice he knew. Soft. Familiar. The kind of voice that had talked him through scraped knees and broken hearts and that one time he'd gotten spectacularly drunk after a stunt went sideways and he'd thought his career was over before Ryder picked him up and forcibly dusted him off.
*Ryland.*
Colt's eyes wouldn't focus. There was a shape beside the bed, blurry, backlit by that awful fluorescent glow. He tried to speak and managed something between a groan and a question mark.
"Hey, hey, it's okay. Don't try to talk yet." Ryland's hand found his, finally something warm, solid, *real*. "You're in the hospital. You're safe. Just... just rest, okay?"
Hospital. The word bounced around Colt's skull like a pinball, refusing to connect to anything meaningful. Why was he in a hospital? What happened? He tried to chase the memory but it slipped away, dissolving like smoke.
