Modern day cafe AU
Frank Iero is a barista who at one point really, truly enjoyed his job at the local cafe. But the powers that be (unchecked capitalism) have turned his workplace into something soulless and miserable, a thing he has to get through to pay his rent on time. The only thing worse than the new corporate bullshit is the newest regular: a weird, quiet guy who camps in the corner all day on his laptop and gets under Frank’s skin like no one else.

Party Poison glares like Frank’s mere presence could’ve jeopardized the game. But then the scowl melts off and is exchanged with a smirk.
“I’m so glad you came tonight!” he says in the fakest sugary tone possible. “It’s important for a novice to observe, because you learn so much. And surely you learned from this, because that?” He motions to the arena behind him. “That’s how you play GridSlam.”
Frank is shaking. He’s this fucking close to decking the motherfucker. Novice? He hasn’t been a fucking novice since age fucking 11!

Summary
Gerard didn’t think he would make it past the age of 25. It just never seemed to be in the cards for him. The world he lived in was not meant for people like him. That’s why at the age of 26, somehow still kicking, he found himself adrift, attending weekly group therapy sessions for suicide survivors and scrambling to make a list of all the reasons he shouldn’t try again.
He certainly never expected the newest, aggressively hostile member of the therapy group - Frank, who seems to hate everyone and everything on principle - to become the next bullet point on that list.

Summary
Nurse Iero is a fuckup. What else is new? But this fuckup deserves a special kind of punishment. And maybe in Ravencolm Hospital, servicing the prisoners in the adjoining penitentiary, he might find purpose again, maybe even peace. Turns out that's pretty fucking hard to do with a coworker like Gerard, with his inexplicable need to dress the way he does, and treat Frank like human flotsam. The rest of the town's creepy-ass denizens aren't helping, or the fact that it's in the middle of nowhere, without even a proper grocery store. Or maybe Frank just deserves to go through hell.
