“Mmm?” Langa hums, not bothering to stop chewing his sandwich. His cheeks are full and round like a chipmunk’s as he looks over at Reki, and Reki feels his heart squeeze just a little bit with affection. Dork.
“I was… wondering, I guess,” and shit, he wasn’t nervous when he was thinking about asking this last night, but now Reki can’t seem to get the words out. “Um… well I was wondering if maybe you… wanted to go… onadatewithme?”

“How long do you have?” he asks, staring intently into Eddie's big, dark eyes. Eddie looks at him for a long while.
“Got nothin’ but time,” he eventually says, and Steve notes that his voice has a sort of gentle lilt when he speaks softly, something sweet and southern running through it. “Rich in that at least.”
And so Steve sits down on the ground in the dirt. The air's hot and sticky, and by the time he stops talking, he isn't sure he's ever been that parched, not ever. He talks and talks. He doesn't stop for a long while.
Eddie Munson listens quietly.---
The battle at Starcourt might have culminated in the end of the upside down back in '85, but Steve is still plagued by nightmares. Years later, he's the last one left in Hawkins - content to stay there, safe and alone and fading into nothing as the summer heat peaks again.

Summary
It wasn't enough for Steve that he managed to get Eddie out of the Upside Down. He felt like it was his fault Eddie came that close to death - so he's keeping him close by and making sure he heals fully, along with making sure his name is cleared and he finally graduates high school.
Eddie is just happy to have made it out alive and feels like Steve is doing more for him than he could ever repay.
