[ “...We’ll be done in a bit,” Rex said, clinging to his dignity about as well as he was clinging to the scraps of clothing still on him.

    Kenobi nodded—

—then gave Rex the most thrilling up-and-down of his short, miserable life.

“OBI-WAN, YOU’RE MAKING IT WORSE!” Skywalker shrieked from somewhere outside.

Kenobi caught himself, gave Rex a sheepish grin, and winked. Someone started coughing uncontrollably. Another choked on their own spit. More codpieces fell to the ground, dislodged by a sudden rush of blood to the anatomy they were protecting.

Kenobi departed with one last appreciative glance at the rest of them, speeding up at Skywalker’s anguished wail. For a long moment, all was silent. ]

    Choice.

Cal chokes, a breathless laugh. “You want me to join you? Me?”

The Inquisitor doesn’t seem to find it as funny as Cal does. “And why is that so unbelievable, young one? Your hate is impressive. Your fear already rules you. You are one of us already, even if you don’t accept it yet.”

    “Black isn’t really my colour.”

(Or: The Second Sister captures Cal on Bracca, and Cal Kestis cements his place in the history books as the worst Inquisitor to ever do it. He keeps helping the rebels, and befriending droids. It’s embarrassing, really.)

[ “It’s pathetic,” she says. “Your passivity. You give in, and then you go no further. Your friend died so you could live! And still you use none of what might make you strong. You waste yourself.” She has Cal backed into a corner now. His heels hit the wall first, then his back. “What would dear, dead Prauf say?”

Cal thinks of the cool press of a water bottle into his hand, of a dream of the room of fountains quieting his night terrors. He thinks of her shattering his cuffs, of her plugging in a hyperspace route far away from Nur without him even asking for her help. He thinks of a forehead pressed against his, and a hand reaching for his through the dark. He thinks of her even like this, shadowed and furious, trying to corner him into hating her.

All of it, to protect him.

“I think,” Cal says, “That he would have liked you.” ]

[ Anakin Skywalker. His name is Anakin Skywalker. His mother was Shmi Skywalker and he is a Skywalker like her. His name is Anakin. Padme says the name Anakin like she has been saying it her entire life. Rex says the name Anakin like a secret pleasure, a privilege. Anakin says the name Anakin like it is one of a stranger, but one that he is getting to know. ]

    Summary

“My Abuela said it,” Silvio insists. “She said you have to wear the hat, because you have a pale ass so you’re going to get skin cancer and die before Lance even wakes up.”

Keith looks between the children and the hat, too confused to glare, sweaty and horrid from pulling weeds beneath the scorching sun. “What?”

“That’s wrong,” Nadia complains, and yanks her brother down to her level to whisper the correction in his ear.

“Ooh,” Silvio amends. “Tía Veronica said you have a pale ass. My Abuela said you’re gonna die.”

    OR

When Lance is fatally wounded during their final battle, the blue lion enters a deep hibernation with Lance inside. Unsure when or if he’ll wake, Keith is forced to wait and watch over him in the company of the people he fears most: Lance’s family.

[ Instead, feeling raw beneath Lance’s adoring gaze, he mumbles, “And how long would you give yourself?”

    Lance scoffs. “Me?”

He hums, considering. Keith’s fingers find the junction between Lance’s flight suit and skin as he waits for an answer. He wishes he could rip that suit off, not for the purpose of seeing Lance unclothed, but so he can pretend the war is over. He can pretend they’re lying side by side at the beginning of their lives, not the end.

“I’m sure I’d try,” Lance says. “Maybe. If you died, left me all alone,” he drawls. “Eventually I’d try fall in love again. I’d try really hard, cause when haven’t I?” He laughs softly, and takes Keith’s hand in his own. He turns it over, thumb tracing the veins of his palm. “But there’d be something off, about everyone. Something that would just…turn me away. Too cheery. Too gloomy. Too fucking…agreeable, or something.”

Lance’s gaze loses focus, stirring up the dusty ground around them. “I’d try, but I don’t think anyone would feel right. I’d reach the end of my life, and realise that… That the whole time, I was looking for you.”

The words settle like rain, blocking out all distraction, all of existence outside that bubble. Keith opens his mouth, trying to speak, but finds he is submerged in Lance’s answer. Nothing he says will compare. Nothing will give those words the weight they deserve. ]

    ---

[ “Why did you sound like that in the recording?” she asks roughly. “You sounded like you were dying.”

Silence settles over the car. Like he was dying, huh? Keith supposes that much is true. Only he isn’t sure why Rachel is even bringing this up, and why now, right before he leaves.

“I sounded like that,” Keith says slowly, choosing his words carefully, “because I…”

Not careful enough. He finds himself at a blockade, a terrible splinter lodged in his throat. He releases a shuddering breath.

“Because we were out there for three years,” Keith says dully. “Three years, and the only thing that made it all worth it, was if I… Was if he came back.”

Rachel still grips the wheel, though they’ve ceased to move. She stares straight ahead, into the intersection of the headlights and the dwindling twilight.

“I wanted to bring him home,” Keith says softly. “I promised him I would. I… I loved him so much, I– Everything would be worth it, if he came home.”

“So,” he continues slowly, “I failed in the worst way a person can fail. Shot myself in the foot. Shot… Everything. Every future, every moment of my life, every moment of his.” Keith draws a deep breath, shuddering. “You know we… We lost so much, and so much time, so much life. But I thought, uh, we thought, that it wouldn’t be too much to ask for, to sort of, have one life. Between us. Maybe we’d each lost something of our own, but, if we led a life together, it… It made everything feel alright.” ]

    Summary

Compared to the pleasant, humid warmth of Ragunna, the wind in Septimont is scorching. It brushes past Cartethyia, like heat from a fire, and paired with the burning light of the sun, she truly feels like she's in an oven. The shade helps; spares her from yet another sunburn, because it seems not even sunscreen can save her here. But, for Imperator's sake, Septimont is hot.
She drags her gaze across the crowd once more, but she is still ten minutes early for their date with Lupa. No, not date, a meetup. Just friends. Two women sharing their love of combat sports, nothing more.

[ It's unfair, how well Lupa wears the heat. Her tan skin glistens slightly, and her white tank top is of thin material, leaving little to the imagination. Cartethyia is a professional; she keeps her eyes above the collarbones. ]
