Summary
Usually Ambrosius shows a little more self restraint, because he knows that nothing good can come out of this longing. Ballister is his best friend, and he’s not ready to screw things up between them and have to revert to being strangers. (Though he supposes that’s a risk anybody in love would have to take. He supposes he’s in love too.) Another thing, Ambrosius is dogged by paparazzi he’d do anything to protect Ballister from. (Though considering the stir he’d caused just by training to be a knight, Ambrosius knows Bal is going to have to deal with his fair share of the media.) And he doubts Channel 5 would take well to a commoner and someone of noble birth (which is bullshit anyways) being 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳. But they already are, in a sense. They already fit together like pieces of a puzzle. It comes with the ordeal of being best friends.
And he’s seventeen, no matter the reasons he could list as to why it shouldn’t work. He can’t help but dream. Can’t help but 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵.

The motel room has one bed left.
Fuck.
Jonathan and Argyle have made themselves comfortable on the first, already curled into each other like parentheses under covers decorated with lint. El lies on the couch, eyes wide and staring blank at the floor, but not saying a word. She hasn’t so much as 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘥 at Mike since…earlier.
Will stares down at the purple rug, matted with dirt.
𝘍𝘶𝘤𝘬.
There’s a tiny plaid recliner chair in the corner, and Mike could’ve sworn he’d seen a rat creeping underneath a minute ago. Will meets his eyes, and looks away almost immediately. He’s barely looked at Mike either.
“Um,” Mike swallows down whatever is passing through his head at the moment, managing a weak smile. “I guess we’re sharing, then. Just like—just like we used to.”
