Things Sasuke undoubtedly knows for sure:
The short and not-so-sweet of it: Sasuke's not in Konoha anymore. The desert? Infinite. The machines? Straight out of one of Kakshi's weird art nouveau sci-fi post-apocalyptic romances that he swears by. The new blonde in his life? Suspiciously Naruto-esque. The short spunky woman with dark hair and even darker eyes? Sasuke laments the argument he's going to have to have with Orochimaru again about how they can't use Uchiha genes in unsanctioned cloning experiments. Now if only he could use Kamui with his Mangekyou Sharingan.

Summary
'There’s no two ways about it,' Sasuke thinks when he cracks his right eye open. His left stubbornly refuses to budge. The inn, which could have been generously described as dilapidated when he first walked in, is now a wreckage among smoldering rubble, barely recognizable. And there is no blonde Uzumaki yelling his ear off about returning to Konoha, and there is no old man in white robes claiming to be the Sage of the Six Paths. On the periphery of his sensory vision, poor as it is, Sasuke can feel the slow rousing alarm of a group of maybe chuunin level shinobi. 'I truly have drawn the ire of Bishamonten.'
This is the story of Sasuke Uchiha, a shinobi out of time and out of place. Against his will he has been drawn back into the orbit of Konoha, but one that is very different from that in which he grew. His ability to return to where and when he was apparently rests in the hands of fiction and legends, and for some cursed reason they have decided that he has not yet paid his pound of flesh.

Step 3: die on some desolate part of the continent without ever having to suffer the embarrassment of apologizing. Step 4: profit. Now if only Naruto had gotten the damned memo.
Here’s the short and the long of it: Naruto, in his infinite wisdom upon ascending to the seat of Nanadaime Hokage, has assigned Sasuke an undercover mission in the Land of Waves, 15 years after Team 7’s first mission there. It is routine almost to a fault, until Sasuke has the misfortune of meeting his backup: a man who has the very distinct misfortune of looking like one newly retired Rokudaime Hokage.

Sitting like this is uncomfortable, but it’s strategic. Makoto’s entire body aches—no, more accurately, it feels incredibly heavy, each of his blinks a little longer, as if he’s physically resisting the compulsion to go right to sleep and never wake up with every deep breath in. If he leans back in this chair, even if it’s not an ideal spot for a nap, he genuinely might drift asleep. And that. Well. This isn’t exactly the spot for it.
If Makoto has been sitting here long enough to think about feeling tired, he’s probably been sitting for too long. Sanada will worry if this takes longer than Makoto’s standard weekly visits—that Makoto’d asked for Sanada to accompany him this time was already far enough out of the ordinary—so Makoto gives himself a little shake and squeezes his own hands. He looks steadily out at Aragaki’s sleeping face, where his lashes rest upon the apples of his cheeks.
“I’m dying,” Makoto admits, then presses his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “...I mean, hello, Aragaki-senpai. I should have started with that…”

In the final month of his life, Makoto pays a visit to the unconscious Aragaki and spills his soul.
