This was a chance to take a break and explore. There's no Imperial presence on this planet.
Technically, that's not a lie.
He runs a hand through his hair and finally calls the Mantis.
“Hey, Cere, I found something. It looks like the entrance to an old Imperial facility. It’s built into the mountain.”
“Interesting that nothing came up on my scans. Is there a landing pad nearby?”
“Nope. Also, there’s no way to get here on foot unless you really, really like climbing.” He pauses. “And jumping. And getting covered in mud.”
“…Cal,” she sighs in exasperation. “I told you to turn back if that happened, and now you’re at an Imperial base.”
“It’s not a base, if that helps.”
“It doesn’t.”
“I got curious,” Cal says with a shrug. Cere mutters something that sounds suspiciously like, I should’ve known. “Can’t get back the same way I came, though. It was a bit tricky getting here in the first place. I’m going to have to go through the facility. Looks pretty abandoned. I’m sure it’s fine.”
“Famous last words!” Greez shouts.

“How are you feeling?”
He can’t find the words to answer. He can’t think. His tongue keeps sticking to the roof of his dry mouth and when he licks his lips, they’re cracked and taste like copper. “…tired,” he finally whispers. “Cold…?” The race back to the Mantis kept him from feeling the chill, but once he collapsed into the copilot’s seat, he’d found himself shivering uncontrollably. Now his hands are still. He closes his eyes again, sinking back into the water, fading away. Maybe he never got out at all – maybe he’s freezing to death in that cave and this is his dying brain hallucinating a peaceful end. Will Cere and Greez come looking if he never makes it to the ship? They shouldn’t, it’s not safe with the Empire around, but he doesn’t want to be left there like a discarded piece of debris for some stormtrooper to fish out and throw in the trash.
(traversing the tundra of Ilum while soaking wet and wearing inadequate cold-weather gear has predictable consequences.)

It‘s just his rotten luck that his 'handsome sparring partner' happens to be his friend Todoroki Shouto. Which is entirely unfair and really bad for Izuku‘s poor rabbit-heart.

Wrapping his own arms around himself as he trembles in the storm of his despair is as close as he’ll be able to get to comfort right now. “It hurts, it hurts.”
He doesn’t want to have to do this alone. He’s so tired of having to push through pain alone. It’s something he’s been doing all his life, but can’t he, just once, have someone to hold him up when he stumbles?
Just once. That’s all he’s asking for.

Deku is never late. He wouldn’t be caught dead late. She knows it, and if the way Iida keeps turning his head to look at the single empty desk in the classroom is anything to go by, he knows it, too. The whole class probably knows it. Nervous energy buzzes around the classroom.
Aizawa-sensei stands behind his podium, hands gripping either side and expression as flat and tired as ever. He calls out roll, and the silence that meets Deku’s name is almost deafening. Ochako holds her breath for the whole few seconds Aizawa-sensei waits before moving on, as if calling his name would summon Deku to the door.
It doesn’t.
