Music played through the hallway, soft and familiar, beckoning Mike to continue forward. David Bowie. There was something distorted in the way it played, Mike couldn't figure out where it came from, stretching every word like the song would continue to play forever but never quite reach the ending.
He doesn't remember the last time he heard a song finish.
"Mike?"
Holly's quiet voice chimes out from downstairs, searching for him.
His head whips around, but the movement unsteadies him, and his shoe presses down onto the landing before he can fall. Mike is turned around, confused, and delirious —

“We haven’t done this since middle school,” Will says, voice barely above a whisper.
“Huh,” Mike whispers back. “Yeah, guess not.”
A couple years ago, Mike read a National Geographic article about a phenomenon called the polar night. In the farthest north and south regions of the globe, there are weeks, sometimes months depending on how close you are to the poles, where the sun does not rise above the horizon, plunging the world into a perpetual nighttime. Living in such conditions, the article had explained, can affect one’s circadian rhythm, heighten issues with concentration and energy levels, and cause a spike in depressive symptoms among local populations. Some resort to using light therapy lamps to mimic the daylight.
It was only after the Byers moved away, all those years ago, that Mike began to understand what the prolonged absence of the sun can do to a person.
The Upside Down is gone, and everyone has made it out unscathed. In the aftermath of the not-so-end of the world, snowballs turn into avalanches. Sometimes it just takes time.
or: Mike gets into Brown, Will gets into RISD, and the friends-to-???-to-lovers slowburn that ensues.

They only have one last summer before they go off to college, and Will is sick of keeping his cards so close to his chest. So, in a fit of alcohol-induced bravery, he tells Mike everything.
Instead of breaking his heart, Mike proposes a deal: they’ll date for the summer. Get Mike out of Will’s system, show him he makes for a lousy boyfriend anyway, and make sure there aren’t any what-ifs waiting for him in New York.
No stone left unturned, after all.
Or: Summer brings clouds, nostalgia, and the all-consuming fear of change. They deal with it.

“You do help,” Will says, simply. “This helps.”The Byers are back in Hawkins, but Will’s life is far from normal. Between the disturbing visions and the whole town treating him like a bad omen, sharing a room with his best friend should be the least of his problems.
Hawkins is under lockdown, but Mike has other priorities. Even with a crumbling relationship and monsters roaming the streets, he can’t stop thinking about his best friend.
Threats loom large while secrets linger, but love has a way of making the apocalypse just a little bit better

Mike breaks into a cold sweat, pulling even more ferociously at his restraints. “Please, don’t–” he rasps. He doesn’t know what Vecna is getting at; he just needs him to stop talking.
Vecna smirks and continues, “You don’t feel the right way about your girlfriend because... because you feel that way about him. About your best friend, about–”
“Don’t you dare say his name!” Mike screams.
Mike Wheeler is very good at being normal. But after being possessed by Vecna, a lot is brought to light – mostly that he can't stop staring at his best friend.

“H—how do you do that?”
There’s a deep crimson flush moving up Mike’s neck, and Will wonders if being high makes people warm like alcohol does. It’s hard to tell if his own hot skin is from the weight of Mike’s gaze or the weed getting to him.
“You open your mouth.” Mike’s eyes trace slowly down Will’s face, glassy and unfocused, until they fix on his lips. Surely the weed is getting to Will. “And I’ll blow the smoke in while you inhale.”
Will’s tongue goes dry. Yeah, definitely the weed, he’s heard about cotton mouth. If Mike is suggesting this, then it must be a normal thing to do with your friends. He wouldn’t offer to do it if it wasn’t.

New York is loud and crowded. Will’s mind is tangling up all his creativity until he’s not sure what to do. When his parents go on a “pre-wedding honeymoon”, he jumps at the chance for an isolated summer at the beach. It’s perfect, except Mike crashes the escape in search of his own. Mike is running from his own shit— things he'd rather keep secret. While high, bordering estranged, and sitting under the stars— they agree to a summer of answers and no questions.

"We need to talk," Lucas says quietly, breaking the silence after a long moment. He looks at Mike, his expression unreadable. "About what we saw. And what that thing knew."
Nancy meets Mike's eyes in the rear-view mirror. Her gaze is hard, questioning. Distrustful.
"Woah, woah!" Mike throws his hands up, nearly hitting Will as he recoils from their accusatory stares. The guilt is still burning in his chest, but defensiveness is a quicker shield. "Guys, I don't know what he was talking about! I thought the shadow was all in my head and lied about that, yes, but I'm not hiding anything else!"
OR: Mike's denial of his feelings for Will finally catches up to him as Vecna pulls out all the stops to ensure his plans come to fruition, hell-bent on disrupting the group's carefully maintained harmony.
Three weeks after Max's near-death and miraculous survival, the Party is unexpectedly dragged back into a world of nightmares. And this time, all of them getting out of this alive doesn't feel like it will be easy.

“Jesus Christ! Hold on,” he mumbles, floating down the steps. He flicks on the porch light and yanks the door open. “What the hell are you–” He freezes.
For a moment, he really does believe he’s dreaming. You know, given that not a single fucking thing about this situation makes any goddamn sense. Because on the short trip from his bedroom to the front door, Mike made a list in his head of all of the people that could potentially be on the other side. It was a rather abbreviated list, to be fair: The cops. Nancy. His landlady, Freida. That one drunk guy he occasionally gives a cigarette to if he happens to be smoking on his porch when he walks by.
But it’s not any of those people. It’s Will. A year older, soaking wet, shivering with a waterlogged duffel bag slung over his left shoulder. Yeah. He’s dreaming. Because he had spoken to Will on the phone not even ten hours ago. He was about to go on his three year anniversary date with his long term boyfriend in New York City.

Will needs some space from his boyfriend, James, and for whatever reason, he decides to take that space at Mike's townhouse in Boston. Mike is going to be so normal about it.

Mike is being a jerk, but he’s just tired. And Will is here in Mike’s car in the middle of nowhere, protected by the growing darkness of the evening, and goddamnit, Mike wants to hear him say it. He wants to hear Will say Mike isn’t better.
