Summary
Samira’s fingers dug into Jack’s shoulders, her head throwing back as a loud, undone whine caught in her throat. The friction building to an unbearable, beautiful peak.
Beep beeeep. Beep beep.
The sharp and high pitched shriek of Jack’s pager shattered the room, echoing directly from the pocket of the crumpled pants twisted around his ankles.
The sharp, rhythmic shriek of the pager didn’t stop. It just kept piercing the heavy silence of the living room.
Jack froze inside her, his chest heaving, his eyes wide as the cold reality of the ER slammed back into his brain. “No,” he groaned against Samira’s neck, his forehead thudding into her shoulder. “No, no, no.”

“I’m making breakfast. How do you like your eggs?”
“Oh,” she says, flustered again — god this girl is easy to work up — “you really don’t have to, Mr. — Dr. — Jack.”
He cocks an eyebrow at her. “You’re a guest in my house Samira. I expect you to act like one, and that means eating breakfast when I offer.”

Summary
“Heh, sadly my pedestrian status isn’t by choice. My car croaked a few weeks ago and I haven’t found the energy to shop for a new one. I got it used and it lasted me eight years, so can’t cry about it.”
Her chest and cheeks are heating up, which is par for the course. She’s been deliberating asking to be transferred to the night shift for months now, but seeing Abbot for the handful of minutes while they’re switching off is humiliating enough. Even this boring snippet of small talk is activating the hairs on her arms. Her last proper crush was in med school, and the recipient equally problematic. But this will pass, like the rest. Crushes are like stomach bugs. You accept the pain, feel a bit sorry for yourself, and trust your body to handle it.

Summary
“Because if I were softer with her, everyone would know.” His voice trailed off in defeat as he hung his head.
Brahms arched one single grey eyebrow, angling his head forward slightly as if urging Robby to continue on.
Robby looked up at the man sheepishly, embarrassment written on his face.
“...Everyone would know how much I want her.”
*
Rather than traveling, Robby uses his Sabbatical to finally go to therapy. Along the way, Samira and Robby both realize just how close they are and how much closer they want to be.

Summary
“I care about this conversation very much.” Samira tells him awkwardly, speaking low so no one else overhears them. Jack nods, like he expected as much. “But I’m catastrophizing this in my head already, so maybe you should leave and end it here and we’ll pick it back up when we’re not at work.”
Samira can see the laugh Jack suppresses at her admission. The amusement he’s sourcing from her right now isn’t cruel or belittling, he’s just— he likes her, he likes her quirks and neuroses, he likes when she tells him to get lost while they’re at work, he likes when she’s honest with him about what she’s thinking and what she needs from him.
She makes him happy, if she can believe it, by just being herself.
“I look forward to when we’re not at work, Dr. Mohan.” Jack tells her with a barely there smirk, taking a step back from her and composing himself to leave her side.

Summary
Samira Mohan’s life is divided cleanly into two distinct halves: before PittFest and after it. She will never again be the person she was when she clocked in for that shift. She will never forget the give of her patient’s skull beneath an EZ-IO or the slip of the pigtail catheter between her fingers. Even months later, she’s still struggling to unpack all the ways that day changed her life.
Perhaps the strangest residual effect is that Jack Abbot sort of, inexplicably, becomes her best friend.

Or: Samira Mohan finds her way through residency and subsequently stumbles onto a whole lot more.

Summary
Emery Walsh had come highly recommended by one of her colleagues so Samira is a little surprised when, on the morning of her dinner party, she opens her door to, perhaps, the most handsome middle-aged man she’d ever seen in real life.
“Samira Mohan?” His voice is deep and gravelly. He’s holding two large shopping bags, filled with groceries, in each of his big hands. Maybe this is Emery’s assistant, here to drop off supplies ahead of her arrival?
“Yes?” Samira is suddenly, acutely, aware that all she has on is a tank top and her skimpiest sleep shorts. She can feel her nipples poking through the thin fabric.
“I’m Jack Abbot, Emery’s replacement. I would shake your hand but uh,” he says with a grin as he lifts up the groceries bags with ease, making his biceps bulge out gloriously against the sleeves of his t-shirt.

Summary
Once, during a lull at the beginning of his shift, Perlah had found Abbot in the stairwell, humming tonelessly under his breath as he’d stared at the underside of the steps and tapped out a rhythm on his knees. Hadn’t been until later that Robby had put two and two together and realized that the fireworks being set off across the river due to the Steelers winning sounded like mortar shells going off.
Maybe that was it. It pissed Robby off that his night shift attending who stood on the roof at daybreak after shitty nights and who should probably up his antidepressant dose and who sat in stairwells looking at nothing for thirty minutes during PTSD episodes had caught his mistake. His mistake. His. Him: Dr. Michael Robinavitch String-of-letters-behind-the-name, Senior Emergency Attending Physician of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Was it rational? No. But it pissed him off anyway.
~
Robby's simmering resentment boils over.
Abbot... handles it.

That is not what happens, but the kiss he gives her is full of heat and possibility. Here, the slant of his mouth on hers says, take this hunger and build on it, then give it back to me. And she does.
Or

Summary
John Shen doesn't believe in coincidences. He believes in patterns.
He also believes, very firmly, that when two highly competent doctors who don't usually share shifts suddenly started overlapping at two in the morning, it is not a scheduling anomaly.
It is a situation.
And Shen, unfortunately for everyone involved, is very good at identifying situations.
