Summary
Erica’s thumbs are sticky with dried blood. She’s twelve years old and she’s been sitting next to the corpse of her brother’s girlfriend for three days.
She’d grabbed Lucas’ hand and yanked it as hard as she could, only for him to slip out of her grasp, mouth parted in a silent scream as a vine wrapped around his neck. It hissed and smoked and the rift disappeared with him, leaving only sparkling ashes in its wake.
For three days, she’s been alone. No one else had made it out of any of the gates. The one person who could help her figure this out, Dustin, is stuck in there. With Lucas.
With Eddie and Max dead, Lucas is dragged into the Upside Down before the gates close. It’s a fight to survive the next six months and Dustin’s theories and plans continually fail to open a gate—until there’s hope from someone outside. He just prays their way out doesn’t take another life.

No one on Berk has ever viewed Tuffnut Thorston as smart. Lack of spatial awareness? Definitely. Remarkable ability to set anything on fire? Obviously. The reincarnation of the trickiest Norse god of legend? That was more like it. But no one on Berk viewed Hiccup as anything but those things until he managed to train and ride a Night Fury, so Tuffnut has some hope. Valki Hofferson—cousin and adopted sister of Astrid—gave him hope.
His best friend certainly rolled her eyes and threatened to stab him just as much as other Berkians, but she was also the one to straighten him out and occasionally bail him out of trouble. Their friendship worked almost as perfectly as dragon and rider—mutual protectiveness, loyalty, and brief affection.
Until several years spent together defending Berk from the backs of their dragons. Until the budding love lives of all their friends makes Valki realize that her gruff exterior has kept Tuffnut away from where she wants him most—her heart.

Eddie breaks into a run and barrels past Chim and his increasing protests until he reaches Hen, kneeling on the ground next to someone in a C-collar, partially blocking them, but Eddie knows those pants. He knows those shoes.
Hen stands and backs up in the way Eddie has seen her do a dozen times when she can’t help a patient anymore, when there’s no hope or help for them anymore. When all she has to do is wait for death to strike before she can move on.
Eddie’s gut is swept out from under him, falling as far as the seventh floor loft he knows so well, with Buck’s bloodied face on the ground before him.
