The boy smiled, tilting his head. “I gotta say… that thing is all sorts o’ nutty.” He rubbed the back of his neck, bashful. “Y’really scared me for a second there. That thing… I couldn’t even imagine goin’ back to tell yer pap that I had to follow ya down and drag ya back out myself.”
A small laugh, “You would not have done all that." he smiled despite himself.
“Are ya kiddin?” he looked almost offended. “I’mma genu-ine sheriff! I'd do whatever I gotta do t’ bring ya home! It’s the job!” He couldn’t help the smile that crawled up his own face, mirroring the ballerina’s. It was a nice one. Even if he was missing a tooth.
“What’s up with that?” he tilted his head, mirroring him back. “Like… you’re a real one?”
“O’course I am!” he dusted himself off, tipping his hat. “As real as you are a real… uh… bal-er-ay-na?” he guessed.

When everything is over, they head out to the courtyard. The dome is a vast, inky swath, shards of immovable, uncountable stars studded within the night. It’s unnatural, ironically beautiful for the horrors they just witnessed. They take a stroll as they talk, little things meant to comfort each other.
Desmond entwines his hand with hers as they slowly walk over the stone-lined path to the benches. Her fingers lock over his, and he thinks again that it all comes so naturally. We still haven’t talked about this, he realizes. The way they stared at each other at the Olympics, drawn in by some invisible string of fate. When he saw her across the train and thought that’s her, her eyes seemed to widen in what he hoped was relief or shy joy. He knows the feeling is clearly mutual, but a part of him wants her to admit it, to tell him that it’s real.

Felix watched him with his mouth agape and his eyes wide open, equally surprised and amazed, not knowing what to say. Those eyes, those dark eyes… They seemed all too familiar to him.
Perhaps it was the soft dark circles that adorned the lower part, or maybe it was his long lower lashes, contrasting with his drooping eyelids, or even how difficult it was to distinguish where his iris ended and his pupil began, as if they blended together to form the deepest abyss of all. A familiar abyss into which Felix remembered having let himself be absorbed a thousand times, smiling every single time.

They simply go through the motions, with a complete understanding of how little choice they have in the matter.
Either they’re going to the store, or to catch butterflies, or to pick flowers with Julie, most of the time they end up at Wally’s house talking about what to paint.
These aren’t bad ways to spend a day, Frank just sometimes wishes they could do something that really matters.
