The ice had changed Steve, made him dark and bitter and controlling; it had crept up on him, like a cancer, dulling his once bright, stubborn spirit into something desperate and angry and helplessly lost. Steve hid it well, reassuring those who believed in his legacy with a winning smile and sparkling blue eyes and a streak of righteousness that the public adored. Few people ever saw a glimpse of the blackness that permeated Steve’s spirit, and he saved the darkest parts of himself for Bucky.
And Hydra had changed Bucky irreversibly too, had stolen parts of him that he’d never get back. That the doe-eyed boy who used to stand by Steve’s side and laugh with him and protect him, had been turned into a broken wretch, an empty shell, a pathetic shadow of who he used to be. And the day Steve realized that, the day Steve had started calling him James, was the day that Bucky realized that Hydra had taken Steve from him, too.

Summary
Shortly after the fall of SHIELD, the Avengers receive intel on the location of the Winter Soldier. Steve convinces the others to rescue him and bring him back to the Tower. He didn't expect the road to Bucky's recovery to be so difficult, and has to fall into the role of Handler as Bucky continues to think and act like the Asset. What he never counted on was liking the role as much as he does. But when Bucky wakes fully and confronts Steve on his actions, can their friendship be salvaged? Has Steve destroyed any trust Bucky had left to give? On the long road to recovery, as Bucky's relationship with the rest of the Avengers grows, can he and Steve find their way back to each other?
