I could see very clearly despite the dark, and indeed for once I did not stumble as I walked over the rough ground. I had no destination except away, a brute animal instinct of flight mastering my limbs while my mind busied with less coarse things, solacing itself in the smell of worm-wood, bitter and clean, and the spare barren walls of the valley, a worn purple like heather against the night.

Nick Clark has come unstuck in time.
He tries to tell Gloria once, when they're tangled up in each other, coming down. She's cold to the touch, and he feels like a furnace. She gasps whenever he touches her, his sweat burning like dry ice against her skin.
He can tell she doesn't believe him until he says they're all just the dead walking and her eyes clear, like it's something she's known all along.
