Her desperate swing makes the rock connect with his temple. A harsh strike to that vulnerable spot that has felled so many larger men before him. Alicent hears a sickening crunch before the man looming over her crumples to the floor at her feet.
Shock grips her by the throat as she looks down. Eyes widening as she stares in alarm at the ever-expanding pool of blood spreading beneath his still form. The wound in his head is bleeding profusely. (Is he–is he dead?) Her breathing stutters out of constricted lungs, her heart races as the realization catches up to her: she killed somebody.

“Ready?” Alicent asks, taking the wood stick Rhaenyra has given her in lieu of a real blade. She underestimates me, she thinks.
“As ready as ever,” Rhaenyra says.
She looks like she is made of first-rate Valyrian steel standing before Alicent: her face is hard and her body, her practiced stance is hard, and underneath her clothes Alicent knows her body is all muscle and murderous instinct. She’s a Targaryen, she thinks, dangerous, the blood of the dragon runs in her veins, its madness too, and she decides right there to win even if it costs her everything. But the irrational part of her brain still knows she’s wonderful.

Rhaenyra leans back, getting comfortable in her chair as if it is just another throne for her to claim. While exuding the confidence of somebody who has come to expect her commands to be followed, she orders, “Now kiss.”
Alicent stutters out a feeble objection, “Excuse me?”
Rhaenyra doesn’t deign to respond, sitting alarmingly still and silent. Judging her and finding her wanting. All Alicent can hear is the loud ringing of bells, echoing around in her head like the city is falling all over again. She casts a sidelong glance at Mysaria who seems to be just as flabbergasted by the suggestion.
