His hair falls across his face as he makes a slow, half-hearted attempt to sit up. He can smell it now—a rich, heady scent that intoxicates his every sense. It smells of amber, of caramel, of butter melting on his skin. It smells of gooseberries, peonies, and sweet Lambrusco.
It smells like Louis.
It is this realization that frees him from his own complacency, and Lestat feels it then—the sound of his own heart stopping to mimic that of another, the one beating confidently and freely at his side. His body is wrapped in a thick woolen blanket; beneath it slips the silk of a pajama that does not belong to him. He lies on pillows, feeling his feet dangle off the edge of a—couch?
“Good morning, sleeping beauty,” that voice, frankly far too amused, reaches him from the opposite couch, across a hideous slate coffee table.

“Do you think she loves you?” Louis laughs then, cruelty defending his butchered heart, in his chest that’s too exposed. “Do you think she cares about you? “She loves me” he sounds like the anguished howl of a dog being put down, as copious, scarlet tears stream from his eyes while he raises an elbow to cover his mouth.
He looks like an angel, Louis allows himself to look closely at him in his pain. His lost, wounded and fallen angel, rejected by the heavens the moment he was born. Louis would like nothing more than to hold him in his arms, to promise him that everything will turn out all right, in the end.
“Oh, really?” he says instead. “You had a daughter, and you loved her—even you can’t deny that. Tell me, then, would you have done that to Claudia?”

The lights in T2 flicker and Jack can hear the whip of heavy canvas walls as a brutal storm rips across the desert. Milton is the one Jack had no chance of putting back together but he still tried. Fifty-five minutes of rapid infusion and internal cardiac massage and then he had called it, Milton's flat, empty heart in his hand.
Jack doesn't flinch while looking into the abyss of flesh and bone but he does lie to Ellis. "Looks good. Monitor the output, grab me after CT or if he goes south."

Ends on definitely a sad note for Anatole, like depressingly pathetic for him, so fair warning.
