"bonding" is what it is called when two rabbits learn to trust each other, live happily together, and feel deeply safe with one another. crepus realizes that this has happened with kaeya and his son, but he unexpectedly has to reassure them that they won't be separated when an oblivious orphanage director comes knocking to take kaeya away.
it's a good thing he doesn't plan on letting them– kaeya is safely here to stay.
[ specifics of this bunny ears universe: some people just happen to have bunny ears, and said people just happen to display certain rabbit-like behaviors. kaeya and diluc both happen to have these things~ no weird social structures come with it at all. ]

There was a playful glint in Kaeya’s eye. “Aren't you the lord of the house now?” he teased. “Let them hear. Who's going to scold you?”
______After confessing things he probably shouldn't have on a drunken night, Kaeya pays a visit to the Dawn Winery manor for the first time in a long time. Diluc isn't interested in an apology, but Kaeya is persistent, and so they fight and eventually fuck it out.

“Then what are you?” Kaeya drawled. “You hate me too much to call me a friend, and I like you too much to call you a foe. We've fought with sword just as we've played as children, and yet we both act like neither had ever occurred. Tell me, Master Diluc, what should I call you?”
______Kaeya drinks too much at the Acting Grand Master's Suprise Party, and Diluc is tasked with kicking him out after all the other guests have gone home. But at this late hour in the evening, regrets of the past accidentally slip out, and hands wander places best forgotten by sober minds.

It was that warm sun that played through the leaves of trees and grapevines now, sparkling on stone walls and reflecting in Diluc's fiery hair. Kaeya trailed behind him up the path like a shadow, baffled by his enthusiasm and yet, somehow, enchanted by it. His steps picked up a little without his notice, and he stumbled once, just slightly, before giving in to it and taking off running after Diluc. He was too young, then, to fear the roots of affection sprouting in his heart.

Disconnected from humanity for so long, he still feels the effects and pull Khaenri'ah left on him, the feeling of absence, like a ghost watching the world play out like a stage play. But reality had hit him hard enough to knock him from the audience; he was an actor in this stage now, and he's lost the man who cared for him.
That grief carried into the decision to shed his lies. He couldn't keep carrying them and this grief both. One of them had to go, and he'd be damned to hell before he lets this sliver of humanity he's finally grasped slip away.

Summary
Time has its way of wearing down on everybody, and Diluc has it especially hard this time around. Luckily for him, he's able to seek refuge in the one he dearly loves, and takes comfort in Kaeya's arms as a way to escape his troubles... at least for now.

I wrote this as a small vent/comfort piece while indulging in the presence of my partner during a relatively rough night a while ago. This is merely just me projecting without thinking about it too much.
